PECo Posted April 7, 2018 Posted April 7, 2018 I found this bullet in the Tonto National Forest, today. Would someone please identify it for me? Quote
frosty Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Do you have any way to get a diameter measurement? My guess is .45 ACP, but that’s just based on shape, without a diameter measurement it’s impossible to say for sure 1 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted April 8, 2018 Super User Posted April 8, 2018 Use a caliper or micrometer for a diameter and that will give you a solid answer. If you have a good scale that might put you in the ball park. Should weigh 240 grains ish. 1 Quote
frosty Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Ok, using the ruler in the picture, it puts the diameter at 5/8”! That’s no .45 ACP. That’s over 15 millimeters, so I have no clue what that would be out of, other than a big gun! Quote

I wonder if someone was deer hunting with a muzzleloader? nevermind, I see what you’re saying about the hollow base, I couldn’t see it until you pointed it out Quote

A 5/8" diameter bullet would be a monster. Quote
frosty Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 No, I’m looking at the diameter. I marked the diameter on a piece of paper and used the ruler the bullet is laying on to measure the diameter. 5 hours ago, 38 Super Fan said: You're looking at the length of the bullet...not the diameter. je1946 Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 To do a proper and accurate measure you really need calipers and a scale. I agree that to me its a 45 ACP Quote
PECo Posted April 8, 2018 Author Posted April 8, 2018 Thanks, guys. I was thinking it might be from an old muzzle loader, because there aren’t any rifling marks on it, but I also think it’s copper jacketed. I found the bullet next to an interesting rock: I’ll stop the the ranger station in Payson to see whether I need to put it back where I found it. Quote
desmobob Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Looks like a .45ACP hardball bullet to me... Tight lines, Bob Quote

I thought it was just a nice piece of chert, but a buddy says it looks worked to him, which means it’s an artifact that mustn’t be removed from the site, because it’s on public land. I’ll ask about it at the ranger station, tomorrow. Quote
PECo Posted April 9, 2018 Author Posted April 9, 2018 The Bureau of Land Management defines artifacts as, “objects made or used by humans.” Artifacts cannot be removed from public lands. I stopped by the Payson Ranger Station, today, to see whether I had to put the rock I found back where I found it. Although it might be an artifact, I found it in the middle of a forest that has been torn up by loggers and not near any archaeological sites, so the Ranger said I could keep it. I think it’s a small knife or an arrowhead, but whether it’s an artifact or not, it’s a colorful chunk of chert. Quote
frosty Posted April 9, 2018 Posted April 9, 2018 It’s definitely cool looking, I thought it was flint. Quote

It is just a little under 1 inch in diameter. If you scale the diameter and compare that dimension to the scale that shows the length to be about 1 1/2 inches, you get a diameter of just under 1 inch. And as mentioned before, no rifling marks. I'm no expert, but it's a lot larger in diameter than .45. Unless I'm missing something. Quote

I originally marked it but accidentally marked the shadow line which is what threw my measurements off so much. Quote
Super User MickD Posted May 13, 2018 Super User Posted May 13, 2018 Yes, you are right. I did it all wrong. Never mind. :-) Quote
