Jig Experts I need your help!

Has anyone with the do-it poison head jig mold have used the Gamakatsu Superline Spring Lock Hook? Does it fit? Do you like it? I need a stout hook for braided line. If you guys know of another 28 degree heavy wire hook let me know.

Thats a 30 degree bend, not a 28 degree. I don't think it will fit in the Do-It mold. Am I wrong? Can I use a 30 degree jig hook in a poison tail mold?

I just checked and the 4/0 Gamakatsu hook fits perfectly in the 3/8 and 1/2oz cavities. Additionally the VMC 7216 in 5/0 fits these same cavities as well. While I am a fan of Mustad hooks the Gamakatsu ones I posted about are so much sharper than the 32886 Mustad ones.

 

Generally Do-It molds will accept a lot of hooks and sizes not listed on the mold as they are cast. Now a CNC machined mold is less forgiving.

Thank you, Thank you! I will ordering the mold!! That really was my hangup on this mold. I just started pouring jigs, and I am trying to catch up with "hook Language".

You would't have a 4/0 VMC 7217 laying around there you could check in that mold would you?? Does hook thickness affect the mold at all? Or as long as its the proper angle it will fit?

I don't have any of those hooks laying around. Hook thickness does matter but the VMC and Gamakatsu hooks are both heavy hooks. If you want to make sure that hook fits you can call Barlow's Tackle and they will check for you.

Not sure what kind of jig you are looking for but if a 28-30 degree hook mold is what you want look at the Do-It grass jig mold.

What size Poison Tail do you want to use? The 4/0 VMC 7217 is the hook you want if using heavy braid but you will need to modify the mold to make it fit since the wire is too heavy for the jig hook it is made for. The 4/0 Mustad 91768 is .057" diameter while the VMC 7217 is .066" diameter, that is a pretty big difference, the modification isn't hard but you being new to this it may be a bit trying until you've poured for a bit so you get use to how the hooks fit and what needs to be done to get a new hook in the mold. I don't know what you want to do with the jig but if you are looking at using it as a flipping-pitching-bottom contact jig, well there are molds that are better suited that use a heavy hook that you won't have to modify. If you want a swim jig then look at the Trokar Pro Swim jig mold, and you don't have to use Trokar hooks, the Mustad 32796 will work fine and they are heavy wire so you won't have to modify it to get a heavier hook. There are a lot of options but if you want the Poison Tail, which is a great jig, you'll have to modify it in order to take a hook that will work with the heavy tackle you intend to use.

I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as these two guys but I have slightly bent hooks to get them into molds that they weren't made to fit, like putting a 28° in to a mold that takes 30°.

Even with braid I highly doubt you can bend out most of these hooks unless Tarpon fishing.

I gotcha. the mold I want is the PTJ-3-AFS 3/8 ounce mainly. the Jig will be swam mainly, but I would like to have the option to change out the trailer and flip with it if needed. I am calling Barlow's in a few to ask them regarding the 

SMJ-3-MF the grass weedless jig, and ask them if that VMC 7217 fits it. Again, thanks for all the help and knowledge.

That mold is designed for the 32886 Mustad, in fact any Do-it mold designed for a 30 degree hook will have to be modified to fit the VMC 7217 and the reason is swim jigs aren't usually fished on heavier tackle and the ball collar models like the bullet bass jig were designed before so many anglers were using super lines. The 7217 is a super stout hook but you'll have to modify any mold in order to use it.

Looks like I'll have to modify the mold. Besides going real slow, do you have any advise, tips, or tricks to modify the mold?

Get you a tube of high temp RTV silicone.  You can use it to cover up mistakes.  You should see some of my molds that used to have collars and take 90° hooks that now take flat eye 28° hooks.

If you only have to modify for the hook thickness behind the collar it's easy. Just takteone of the hooks and fold some high number grit in have around it. Lightly sand each half until it fits.
