Double Gear Ratio Reel

Have you guys heard of double gear ratio spinning reels?

Something flashed in my head when i first heard of that. Does it mean that we don’t need to take 2 or 3 reel & rod combos with us when go outside fishing? Will the two ratio both match one specific action & power rod? Seems to be reasonable to adjust to high gear ratio when searching the area to find where fish are holding, and to low gear ratio when getting bites.

The main reason I'm taking multiple setups is so I have multiple power/action rods for versatility and not have to re-tie as much.  However, most of my reels are ~6.2 or 3 to 1 ratio.  One is a ~7.1 and one is 5.4 for frogging.  Now that I think of it though, I wouldn't mind have a high gear/low gear frogging reel so I could bring big fish in with low gear and bring back a frog over mats that are too thick with the high gear.

2 speed reels are not new and a few fresh water bait casters have been on the market in the past. 2 speed salt water off shore big game reels are the preferred reels; fast retreive for keeping the line tight for fast running fish and low speed for power to fight big fish deep.

Dual speed reels have no logical place in bass fishing. They're a pain mechanically too.

They've been around for years for salt gear.  Idea is that you have power for big fish, and speed for getting the lines in on a deep drop to re-bait.  They are a GIGANTIC pain to service.

My 2 Abu 2 speed paper weights are by far the worst BC reels I've owned

I have an Shimano Bantam Beastmaster 2-speed baitcaster from the late 80's. Switch from high speed 6.1 to low 4.1.

Would think that sooner or later the gears would malfunction.

 

As I once read in Consumers Reports, when you are buying appliances get the ones with the fewest features, knobs and buttons as these will not break or malfunction as often.

 

Seems to apply to our reels, too.

But some would say that the ones with fewer features, knobs and buttons are of lower quality and will breakdown/malfunction more on the consumer. To be honest all I can think about is a washing machine right now

I don’t think it’s a stupid idea I mean there has to be a market out there for that one rod one reel bank fisherman and if they can come up with a revamped decent solid baitcaster that can change gears by a good manufacturer, ppl will buy it.

Don't forget electric toothbrush  But to be honest, I only use the clean mode though it can be switched to 3 different modes, thought I would use all of them before I purchase. We often want more than we actually need.

People will buy anything, its all about how well its advertised

It’s not about a specific feature, it’s about the quality of the reel in whole, you can have a flashy reel with a single nice feature or you can have a quality reel that will last for years and that doesn’t have a gimmicky feature. With spinning reels the double gear ratio would not make a difference in anything besides the speed, in baitcasters 2 gear ratios would change speed and power.
