Rod Straps Suggestion

Hi All,

 

I'm looking to add some rod straps to the deck of my boat this season. I was wondering what everyone prefers for type: the wide velcro style or the thin bungee style? Also, do you have them on both sides of the deck and if so, does it get crowded?

I have had them both. I prefer the T&H maine thin bungee ones. The decision to use one on each side or only one depends on the width you have on your front deck and sometimes the room near the console.  On some of my old boats a 7 foot rod laying on the driver console side would have to hang out over the gunnel. It could easily get broken so I only ran rods down the passenger side where 7 footers fit easily on the deck.

I have had all of the ones mentioned.  I prefer the ones that retract back into the gunwale but you would have to do some cutting.  I have them on both sides and normally carry 3 rods on each side.  Enough room but have to watch where I walk.

I have two Velcro straps. I'm considering going with the bungee straps. just easier to work with. I don't worry about the room. my PT18 is really wide at the bow.

Thank you all for the feedback. I was leaning towards the bungees so I think I'm going to start with those.

 

The retractable ones look awesome, but I am nervous about cutting up my boat. I'll probably switch to those down the road.

Looks can be deceiving. I had the bungee style rod straps on my previous two boats. I never had any issues with them, but I always thought the retractable straps looked better. Two years ago I bought a new boat with the retractable straps, and I don't like them at all. They have a bad habit of grabbing onto line and trying to launch my rods overboard. I'm considering adding the bungees.

Retractable boat buckles is what I use. Never a problem even in extremely rough water. Love them!

I've had the Velcro straps and now have the bungee style and I'll stick with them.  I have them on both sides of the front deck but only put rods on one side.  I use the bungee on the other side to retain my landing net and keep it handy.  I've thought about the retractable style but don't want to cut a hole.

I have used the Velcro style and the bungee cords.  I like both.  I currently have the bungees on my boat.  I believe that make the bungees in two lengths.  If you can make the longer ones fit, you can obviously hold more rods down.  Bout the most each one of my bungees will hold down is 3 or 4 depending on the setup.

Thanks all for the additional feedback. I am ordering a pair of the bungees to try them on both sides. They are little easier to remove if I end up not liking them.

You will like the bungees. Leave the screw a little loss so you can swing them up against the side of the boat away from the rods when you are fishing.
