My last cranking question, I promise

I thought I was all set with my cranking rods, but this weekend the Loomis (13") handles just hurt these wrist. 

I have never owner a St Croix and hear great things so the Premier MH and the Avid CB MH, both with 15" handles caught my eye.

What ever I get will be paired with a Met MGL or Conquest 101. 

Any input is appreciated!

I guess it depends just how sensitive you want it. I know most people say sensitivity isnt important because its cranking but I like to be able to feel what my crank is doing. My dad has the avid and loves it. Also a lifetime vs 5 year warranty.

It is funny you bring that up as I was looking at the GLX MBR  and looking for reviews on the popper, thanks 

 

On a side note, how different is the MBR rods from the CB or Popper rods?

The PR series has a softer tip. I also have the spinning version (PR844S) which is my go-to

for live bait. Specifically, live minnows and yellowtail targeting smallmouth on the Tennessee

River.

Not sure what about the rod is "hurting your wrist", but adding a couple of inches to the butt of a handle is one of the easiest things to do in rod building/repair.

What bait and reel where you using? Cranking deep with too fast a reel can be tiring.

Conquest 5.2 or  6.8 are options

I use the GLX PR845C for medium diving 3/8-5/8 oz  cranks like Warts ( Zoner Hunter) and all my structure spooning.

Wouldn't recommend this rod for larger size deep divers over 3/4 oz., good for spoons up to 1 oz.

I use a Dobyns champ XP 705cb for shallow cranking. For medium and deeper divers I use the irod Fred's crank launcher. Love both equally.

I know exactly what your talking about.  I measure that handle from the but cap to the beginning of the reel seat and I want 12" of handle.  My builder thought I was crazy at first, but it's amazing.  My megabass white python and lamiglas excel 735 both have 11" handles.  They are good but that last inch of handle is wonderful.  The older white python slant bridge might be the best cranking rod made ever.  It has a perfect length and shape to tuck up under your arm.  I got a chance to fish one for an hour playing with 8 and 10xds, and it was amazing.  For me this is an area where a custom build really is worth the money.

Yup there is  9 inches from the but to the reel,  just about everything else I own is 12isn

My dobyns 764 has a 9" handle and I hate it.  If shipping was not crazy I might consider having it extended but at shipping costs it just does not seem worth it.

Agreed. The only thing I hate more than a short butt on my cranking rods is a long butt on my popper and JB rods. I extend it as far as I can without it interfering with switching hands, I think its over 16".
