best top waters this time of year?

it has been around 65 to 75 degrees the past couple of days, and I was considering throwing some topwaters, is it to early for frogs? I figured I would just toss some spooks but wanted advice.

What's the water temperature? Almost any topwater may catch you a bass if the water temperature is 65-75 degrees.

I'm honestly not sure right at this moment, I am thinking probably between 58-68

There is a big difference in 58 and 68 man. If its 65 or higher then they should hit a topwater ok but anything below 60 and I doubt its time yet.

Frogs, rats, small poppers.  I start with a popper worked slow.  East coasters say buzzbait from ice out to ice in.

I've had good luck with wakebaits early in the season. I've had some pretty legit fish smack the Shellcracker as soon as the water hits 60+ degrees

I tossed a frog for a minute tonight in the full moon (can't help it)... only had one fish slap at it.  Still think it's a little early for an ACTIVE topwater bite, but it's about time for me to start mixing in a plopper/buzzbait and frog.

Slow trebled topwaters like poppers, propbaits, and floating minnows fished with twitches and pauses are good early in the year, as long as there isn't too much surface vegetation to get hung in yet.  HOW early, though, that's another question. I know some people fish up top with water temps in the mid 50s, but I usually can't get much topwater action until mid 60s (from largemouth at least).

In Michigan we can catch Topwater Bass in the Fall down to 50-55 degrees....and usually it's river Smallmouth which remain on this cold Topwater bite.....not sure if it's the same situation in cooler springtime situations. But I've also heard of KVD catching Bass on BuzzBaits in 40 degree water, so I suppose anything can be worth a try.

 Not sure where all you guys are fishing right now but they’ll need to be pretty aggressive to bust through 18” of ice and hit my topwaters right now. Maybe I’ll wait a bit before I toss out the frog!

Poppers are usually the first baits I can bit on because they can be paused for however long I want. A frog could be used slowly too, but there's no need for one until the vegetation grows.

Spring time , especially post spawn , the Bomber Long A Minnow .  Its  a big fish lure . I like the one's  with the mirrored insert .  I won a fishing derby [ all fish  counted ]    with two bass weighing **** pounds . Caught back to   back 7 lbers  one time and my biggest 6 fish limit of all time [ an estimated 30 lbs ] was using them . I havent had much luck the rest of the year  on them  but spring , they flat out produce .

You should be largely be choosing your type of topwater bait based on how much wind/how calm the water is.

The fish in my picture was caught on a wakebait on 2/26/18. Bottom line - fish won’t hit a lure sitting in your box. Throw ‘em!

Heck I don't care how cold it is, I throw top water and get bit but you gotta know how to work it. Sometimes 5 minute casts. #froglivesmatter

Though they may not be the best presentations, once the water temp. hits the fifty degree mark I break out my Spooks and poppers. I've even caught bass on buzzbaits as early as April 4th here in the mid-west.

Floating Rapala, Bomber long A , floating Smithwick rogue or similar slim minnow baits. Fish them slow, twitch pause reel.
