Do you think this would be a good setup for a shallow (1-12ft) crankbait rod reel combo?

My budget is ~ $100-$170. This rod would be getting a TON of use and I don’t really know brands too well so I just wanted to ask you guys what you thought and if I could trust these brands to hold up for at least a few seasons.

Shimano Curado Crankbait Casting Rod

Moderate Action

This rod is going to be specifically for shallow to mid diving cranks. I was going to buy a separate 7’ MH Fast action rod for my Traps, Spinners, Chatterbaitts, and Buzz Baits. So do you think I should still look for a MH for my shallow cranks or do you think this loadout would be good??

It'll work fine. I throw all my smaller traps and shallow cranks on a 7' medium moderate rod. Just with a 7.1:1 reel which is probably a little fast for dt10s and such but it's what I have.

Dobyn's CL 705 CB ($80) with Shimano Castiac 150 ($99) is close to your budget and a good choice.

Tom

PS, your budget $160, your choice $$330, your math...do you work for the government?

Ive never fished the Shimano Curado Crankbait Rod, it's fairly new to the market; but if their Medium Moderate is anything like a Veritas Medium Moderate, then it might be to whippy of a Rod for anything above 3/8oz. So if you plan on cranking 1-5 foot SquareBills , in and around shoreline cover and shallow structure, you may want a MH Moderate. The MH will give you more steering power in the shallows and greater versatility if you plan on cranking down to 12-14ft.

I would stick with the med mod. I find I hang up a lot less with a med mod rod.

The Duckett Ghost would be a good choice because it's light weight. After a long day of casting most rods start to get pretty heavy, plus its like 100.00 rod which isn't bad. As far as reel goes I like the lews speed spool.

You know, I used to hang up all the time. I learned to stop reeling when I hit a rock and let the bait float up.

This does a couple things: First, it clears the obstacle. Second, it triggers bass to strike. I was never much good with cranks til I figured this out.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll look it up and read some reviews.

And I meant that my budget for each piece of the setup was $100-$170. So no more than $340 total before tax. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for, and then some, so I like to stick right around the middle price range on rods and reels. IMO $400 rods are for the pros and $50 rods are good for beginners just trying to feel it out. So a ~$150 rod is probably perfect for me, i.e.; Someone on a budget with a  moderate amount of experience. :)
