Pprice01 Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Hi All, New to the group, looking forward to getting some help. Im looking to get a new flipping/pitching rod and am looking at either the Okuma TCS 7’6” H or the similarly-spec’d Phenix Recon Elite 766 (7’6”H). THE Phenix is about 2x the cost of the TCS, so I’m wondering if it’s worth the additional investment or if anyone has any experience with either rod. I also like the Dobyns Champion series, but they are 3x of the Okuma. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks. Quote
Stephen B Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Do you have any specs you are looking for? What length of rod do you prefer for flipping/pitching? What size jigs do you plan to throw? Also, what price range? Thanks. Quote

I haven’t flipped or pitched before, so this will be my first foray into it, which is why I’m looking at 7’6” instead of 7’11” - I think a rod that long will be a pain to manage. From my research I don’t believe that I need an XH (fishing Lake Mead primarily and I haven’t seen super heavy grasses or mats), which is why I am thinking of only going with Heavy power. For lures I plan to throw jigs and Texas-rigged plastics with weights up to 2oz, but likely most often only 1-1.5oz. Quote
CroakHunter Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 If you like the price of the tcs, but would like dobyns great customer service and great quality maybe look into a 765 flip in the fury lineup. Although I haven't fished this rod, it is one I've did a lot of reading on and plan to add it to my arsenal when my wife isn't looking. Quote
JROC Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 Have you considered the shimano Curado rod line up? Or even the Kistler helium 3? Quote

I have a fury Rod already and like to get different makes/models to try as much as I can. I see that the Chmpion series is highly recommended and it’s a one-time purchase. I don’t anticipate replacing this rod no matter what I wind up with for a very long time so the extra $150 isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker, but hey a buck is a buck. If the Champion is with it, I’ll pay the extra money. 25 minutes ago, JROC said: Have you considered the shimano Curado rod line up? Or even the Kistler helium 3? I have not looked into either. How do they compare to the others? Quote
RyneB Posted April 12, 2018 Posted April 12, 2018 ALX Zolo series. I like the Zolo Dragger for flipping. But they have several rods for flipping and pitching. Quote
junyer357 Posted April 16, 2018 Posted April 16, 2018 Keep an eye at dobyns website. I bought a used champion 765flip there for $180. Absolutely love it. Quote

Anyhow ... i use it with a 7.3:1 reel and 65lb braid for pitching to heavy junk. I have been very happy with it. The Zodias are a very nice line of rods. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted April 20, 2018 Super User Posted April 20, 2018 Haven't used the Elite, but I have a 766 Recon2 flipping stick and I like the blank a lot. Handle is a little skinny for my liking, but the rod itself is pretty dang good. Whether or not it's worth the cost is subjective. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 I've had the elite 2 and the TCS. The TCS to me fishes lighter then a true heavy. The recon is much more powerful. My favorite is the 796 recon elite 2 though. Quote
