Ksam1234 Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 So I'm wondering how the snow and cold weather will affect bass as it gets further into spring and still freezing. The forecast shows 34 degrees and snow still into mid April, first I have seen it snow this far into spring, or since I can remember , will this make for a bad season this year? Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 26, 2018 Super User Posted March 26, 2018 Bass start the spawn when the water warns to 58-62 degrees, our calendar doesn’t affect them, could be in January or June depending on the weather and prevailing day/night temps. Tom 1 Quote

They are going to do what they are going to do, no point stressing about it. It really depends on how the rest of the Spring develops, but if it stays consistently cold, the most likely outcome is that the water will warm quickly once it does warm, so it will concentrate the spawn to a shorter period. The fishing won't be any worse, but it may appear to be if one doesn't stay versatile and nimble. 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted March 27, 2018 Super User Posted March 27, 2018 I have been around long enough to see a lot of late (and a lot of early springs) up here. It happens when it happens. They will still do what they do every spring, just a few weeks later this year. One thing these long extended cold snaps do before it finally warms up for good is, it will screw up what is "usually" going on in early summer. A lot of fish will still be spawning or in a the post spawn period come time when the majority should be in their usual summer routines. This, IMHO makes for a tough June/July around here, as it seem like it takes until at least August for them to get really patternable again. 1 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted March 27, 2018 Super User Posted March 27, 2018 Because the bass do not all spawn at the same time, it is possible that those that have set up metabolically to be an early wave will not spawn. Depending on species, some will reabsorb their eggs because they will not drop if the water temperature is too cold. They know instinctively that the brood would not survive so they hold them waiting for the right temps. 1 Quote
