SWVABass Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 I need to replace the hooks on a vision 110 jr, can anyone tell me the size I should go with and hook recommendation Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 25, 2018 Super User Posted March 25, 2018 Megabass Katsuage Out Barb Treble Hooks OE is size 8 - I like size 6 Gamakatsu EWG Treble Short Shank Magic Eye size 6 And one I'm using for the first time this season on a few jerk, crank & topwater baits is the Owner Short Shank Treble Hook ST-35 (also size 6). This treble hook features Owner’s 150-degree Premium Point Position design, which splits two hook points out 150-degrees versus the typical 120-degrees between all three points. This allows the hook points to be positioned slightly farther out from your bait and help increase your hook up percentage. Opening the gap to 150-degrees also minimizes damage to your bait from the hook points, while keeping the hook points sharper over time as well. Equipped with sticky sharp Super Needle Points and Owner’s Silky Gray frictionless finish, the Owner Stinger ST-35 Short Shank Treble Hooks deliver faster hook penetration on top of their improved hook up ratio. May not be the deal for a tail hook but seems to have quite a bit of potential 'under the bait'. A-Jay 1 Quote

Super User NorthernBasser Posted March 25, 2018 Super User Posted March 25, 2018 Glad to see this thread. I came here with my own treble hook question. When purchasing crankbaits/jerkbaits, many have reviews that say you should change out the trebles and/or split rings. How do we know what size hooks each particular bait comes with? I can't tell just by looking at them. Thanks! BTW, I hear these are good replacement hooks? http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Gamakatsu_Aaron_Martens_TGW_Nano_Finesse_Treble_Hook/descpage-NFH.html Quote

Super User deep Posted March 25, 2018 Super User Posted March 25, 2018 Stock hooks on 110 Jrs are actually size 8, *not* size 6. They're not Katsuage outbarbs either. Finally, the 110 jr is a suspending bait, unlike regular 110s (slow-floater). 1 Quote

I just corrected my typo - thanks for looking out @deep As for "not being Katsuage trebles" - Perhaps, but I can only go by what they advertise and they are pretty darn close. I've not noticed a different in performance. "The same hooks that come standard on all Megabass Jerkbaits, the Megabass Katsuage Out Barb Treble Hooks are manufactured to the highest standards and feature a sticky-sharp design specifically engineered for finicky strikes. The Katsuage Treble Hooks are built with a light-wire that allows for instant hook penetration, and also reduces extra weight to keep your baits perfectly balanced." A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User deep Posted March 25, 2018 Super User Posted March 25, 2018 ^^ I don't know if they're Katsuages or not. They're not the "Katsuage outbarbs", that's for sure. Several megabass jerkbaits do not use the outbarbs actually, although the different 110mm size onetens usually do. Anyway, all stock hooks are sharp and roundbends, which suits me fine. 1 Quote

Whatever they are - funny thing is, I'm not a fan. I replace Every One right out of the box. My 'collection' of new, replaced OE stock trebles, is at this point, pretty ridiculous. Need to re-home them at some point I suppose. A-Jay 1 Quote
riverbasser Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 I have a question that will hopefully add to this thread. When changing say the hooks on a SK 3xd, they are #6 but a lot of ppl recommend replacing with the mustad short shanks. Do you stay with a #6 or up size? And if you upsize does it affect how the crank deflects off wood? @A-Jay ? Quote

Going plus size calls for short shank trebles irregardless. Working through wood seams about the same for me with either the 4 or 6 size hook; not great but not bad. But the hook up & land ratio is better for me. A-Jay 1 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 25, 2018 Super User Posted March 25, 2018 Anyone ever hook themselves with a out barb treble hook? Tom 1 Quote
Super User Munkin Posted March 25, 2018 Super User Posted March 25, 2018 Most manufacturers will list the size they are using or it is easy to find using Google. Personally I am not a fan of the MegaBass cat sausage hooks as the outbarb really scratches the bait. For replacements here is what I use overall: light trebles = Daiichi Death trap, Heavy= Owner ST, Average= Gamakatsu round bends. Allen 1 Quote
Wildbillb Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 If they don't list it a quick phone call and they manufacturer will let you know the size. I have called before when I couldn't find the info. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted March 26, 2018 Super User Posted March 26, 2018 Sorry for hi jack this thread, but since we are all about treble hook and jerk bait. Anyway change the back hook to feathered one? I did on one of my pointer 100. I found the action become more subtle (too subtle?) and so far still no bite. I caught quite a few before this mod. Quote
SWVABass Posted March 26, 2018 Author Posted March 26, 2018 To all that have chimed in or asked another question, you have in no way hijacked the thread. This is what I love about this site and community people sharing info to make others successful and build the conversation as we go!! @JustJames were talking about trebles brother ask always!! If I had a feathered I deft would try it. As far as effects to bouyancy or if it kills the action I don’t know. Maybe @A-Jay will chime back in. Excellent conversation to this point! Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 26, 2018 Super User Posted March 26, 2018 Feathered trebles for me is often restricted to topwater baits. Generally don't care for them on jerkbaits; acts like a parachute. Slows the action quite a bit. Now I know there are times where that's a good thing, but the feathers seem to numb that sweet & subtle 'roll' right before the pause, (which is when the magic happens) and that's not a good thing in my book. Feathers do seems to work quite well for the walleye & pike. Although both are great eating, the higher 'bite off' potential is a deal breaker. A-Jay 1 Quote
Logan S Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 FWIW, I bought replacement 110 Jr hooks directly from Megabass USA back when they still sold hooks in bulk. They're just standard light wire #8's...I think VMC's. Any light wire #8 treble should be fine on the 110 Jr size. Also FWIW, the A-Mart Nano Trebles mentioned earlier in the thread run about 1 size small. I haven't used them myself, but a friend confirmed that the #5 size Nano is needed to match the size of the #6 Katsuge hooks (he was replacing standard 110 hooks). I stick with the stock #6 Katsuge outbarbs for standard size 110's, I think it's the best hook for them. Quote

Tom Bit of an old thread, but I ran across it researching replacement trebles. Anyway the answer is yes. Past the barb. Not awesome! The good news is a 90 degree 'pull' on the hook instead of a 90 degree push seemed to do the same thing - create enough space to get the hook out without shredding parts. Quote

Tom I drove a treble really deep into my hand bringing in a group of rods after a day on the water. I had the wife hold the bait steady while I cut the hook that was deep into me then grabbed the back of the hook with needle nose pliers and drove it on through until the point came out, whereupon I had the wife grab the point with another needle nose and pull it out. The worse part of the operation was my wife constantly saying OMG,OMG LOL. Quote
