Super User king fisher Posted August 21, 2024 Super User Posted August 21, 2024 I can cast a bait caster one yard less than I want to, and 10 yards more than I need to. 6 Quote

Super User bulldog1935 Posted August 21, 2024 Super User Posted August 21, 2024 umm, reverse-spiral skip-cast... Quote
Super User Bankc Posted August 21, 2024 Super User Posted August 21, 2024 I've cast a spinnerbait 300 yards before. It would have gone further, but I ran out of line. Though, I have to give some credit to the 80+ mph gusts behind me. That came about because I often like to fish on my lunch break, and we had a rare day where we had extremely high winds, but no storms. And I knew it was too windy to fish, but having nothing else to do after finishing my sandwich, I started to get curious... What would happen if I tried? The biggest surprise about it was getting soaked by billions of droplets of water in the air. You'd think with the wind behind you, pushing the waves away from you, it wouldn't be an issue. And I don't understand the physics behind it, but that's what happened. 1 1 Quote
dave Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 I looked through every post here and I will only say I've seen all the "I can cast XX yards", posts over my span of time here on BR. I have been here since 2004. I have always said to take your rods to your local football field. Stand at the goal line. Cast, cast, cast. Hang head, hang head, hang head... Your cast isn't as far as you think it is... 7 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 21, 2024 Super User Posted August 21, 2024 Old thread. I have a bit more experience under my belt. Any pamphlet I've seen that came with a reel and mentioned how much line to spool has always said 1/16 or 1/8 below the spool lip. I always spool to the bevel. Reel Gen1 STXL listed at 135/12# Rod 7' MHF Jupiter (Walmart rod made by Daiwa) Line 40# Sufix Performance Braid (12# equivalent) Lure 3/4 oz. spoon tied direct Distance over half the spool Since one revolution measures less at the arbor than at the lip, I'm certain I was casting more than half the number of yards spooled. So at least 70 yards. Maybe 75 yards. Definitely wasn't hitting a 2 foot circle. Quote

Actually, it is - my back yard is an acre, I have a casting range laid out, and convenient stands of wild shrubs at 80', 110' and 130' - if it crosses the fence, it's over 150' 3 Quote
Bazoo Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 The farthest I have ever cast is 60 yards. I paced it, and that was with a 1/2 oz weight going for distance. The farthest I can cast with any amount of accuracy is about 40 yards. At 25-30 yards though I am reasonably accurate. I can hit an 18" target normally at that distance, and when I'm on I get centered on a smaller target, but will cast over or short. So distance judging is probably my weak point. When I'm on, at 25 yards I can sink a spinnerbait in a lawnmower tire I use to practice casting at. It makes a satisfying jump when you flip the spinnerbait out of the center. 1 Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Old thread, but seems to have been revived,... I have a short shooting length marked off for initial sighting in of scopes that is 50yrds from our Cypress tree to the woodpile of the fire pit, and an additional 10yds to the treeline of the woods. I set my shooting stand next to the cypress and the target next to the fire pit. When I cast from the Cypress, I can gauge distance pretty well. If I reach the firepit, I'm at 50yds, if I drop over the hill at the treeline, I'm at 60. (For the safety minded people, there's a ravine just past the treeline in the woods with a hill beyond it that makes a nice backstop for shooting! 😁) When I have a setup I like, the majority of casts max out between 30-40yds. Lighter casts and pitching are more like 15-20 at the most. 1 Quote
Sota Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 How far can I cast a bait caster? hmm well considering I’ve never used one. I’d say the length of the rod plus leader. So like 9 feet. On a good day. On a bad day 0 feet but the best d**n bird nest you ever seen in any reel. 2 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted August 22, 2024 Super User Posted August 22, 2024 40-45yds is a long cast for me - most of mine are around 30-35yds. That's the main reason I only put 65-70yds of (expensive) mainline on my reels...long cast plus enough extra for reties to last a season...break-offs of course are another matter. Quote
Peacedivision Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 very much depends on the rod/reel/line/lure tied on. sometimes I can cast 30 yards, sometimes I can dump a spool down to the arbor knot. Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted August 22, 2024 Super User Posted August 22, 2024 Almost all fishing is inside 90' The rare exceptions are reaching distant structure; e.g., crossing a tide pass to fish both the far slope and the near slope doubles your fish chances. 3 Quote
