Rodney Smith Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 I have good foul weather gear, so I don’t mind fishing in the rain. However, I don’t like for my tackle bag to get soaked. I have to worry about rusted hooks. I have a Cabela’s Advanced Angler Large tackle Bag. I know it can put a garbage bag over it, but I had rather have a real solution. I could buy waterproof boxes, but that would be expensive and they might not fit. I had a Bass Pro bag before that had a built in rain cover. Any ideas? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 25, 2018 Super User Posted March 25, 2018 A garbage bag is a real solution. Not pretty, but totally effective. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted March 25, 2018 Super User Posted March 25, 2018 You can buy rain covers for hiking packs, they have elastic around the edges so you might find one that can fit a tackle bag. Quote
Falkus Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 I have found this bag to be great for me since I do alot of shore fishing: https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/world-wide-sportsman-hawks-channel-gear-bag Quote

riverbasser Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Made of PVC material and is completely waterproof. Holds a ton. I use it when I fish as a coangler sometimes Quote
Rodney Smith Posted March 25, 2018 Author Posted March 25, 2018 Good idea. i have had one of these before. Quote
SWVABass Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Another thing to do would by the anti rust inserts for you Plano’s. This has saved a ton of hooks for me. Trash bag is the cheapest most efficient way I’ve found. Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted March 25, 2018 Super User Posted March 25, 2018 There’s no way to avoid a wet tackle bag when you fish in the rain. Once you open it to get a lure it’s wet. You put wet lures back in the bag and it’s wet. It sits on the floor of the boat and it’s wet. When I go as a coangler, I have a portable bag made by Plano that is a fold over top and has a rubberized bottom with the rubber coating coming up about an inch on the sides. The material the bag is made of is also waterproof. With all that being said it still gets wet inside. After a trip in the rain, I always take my boxes out of the bag and open them up to dry. For my hooks and weights box I will give them a squirt of wd40. For my cranks, I use some pieces of sidewalk chalk or desiccant packs in the boxes. I do this even when fishing from my own boat and my boxes are out of the bag. It’s amazing how much condensation can accumulate even if you are not fishing in the rain. 3 Quote
LAO162 Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 You could bring only the essentials in the tackle bag that will be exposed to the elements. Spare and less frequently used gear can be kept in smaller boxes that are in sealed trash bags. Only remove gear from the trash bag as/if it is needed. Quote

I make sure my phone and cigars stay dry and don't care about the rest. Been a few years since I noticed rusty hooks..... coincidentally, around the same time that I threw out the rest of my BPS hooks. Quote
EdKras Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 I don't see how to keep the bag dry if you have to get into it when it's raining. When I get home, I spread everything out in my basement and turn the dehumidifier on high. It's all dry in a couple hours. Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted March 26, 2018 Super User Posted March 26, 2018 I don’t. When my tackle bag gets soaked I empty it out and put it on a boot dryer. Quote

This ^^ So I just stopped fishing in the rain ☔️ Haven't had any issues since... Working out great so far. Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted March 26, 2018 Super User Posted March 26, 2018 This is why I don't use a tackle bag. I use a Plano hard tackle box. As long a sit is closed everything stays dry. I was coming home from fishing one time and ran in to a bad rain storm. I thought I might have to pull off the road it rained so hard. This tackle box was sitting in the boat and nothing got wet in it. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted March 26, 2018 Super User Posted March 26, 2018 I don't worry too much about the bag. I dry it out when I get home. I do try and keep the insides of the boxes dry though. The best way I have found is to unzip my rain top a little, and when I open up the box I lean over it to block the rain. Not 100% effective, but it does keep some of the water out. Quote
Scarborough817 Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 get a tote instead of a bag, realistically everything is going to get wet if you are using it in the rain but i understand not wanting to have to empty it out every time you get home Quote
BrackishBassin Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 I carry all my tackle in a waterproof backpack, but I’m a bank beater so it’s a necessity. Quite often there’s no dry place to set it down. Quote
