Looking for a cranking rod

Began picking up baitcasters over the winter for this up coming season. Now it’s time for more of a dedicated crankbait rod. I don’t do a lot of cranking, nothing real deep or too big. I’m up in the air between a few rods but currently until the end of the month my local store has loomis e6x 845c cbr  and the 843c cbr on sale. Wondering what you might recommend or if I should grab the e6x. I’ve read a few times there’s better rods for the money but it’s a pretty sweet sale.

Dobyns Fury 705cb is what I use for shallow to medium Crankbaits. I also have  an E6X and the Dobyns is a lot nicer rod for a lot less money.

In your opinion what’s the reason the fury seems so much better then the e6x. Is your e6x a crankbait model for complete fair comparison

If you're fishing open water mainly without too much vegetation and up to 1/2 oz lure, I would go with a medium/moderate, for 3/4 oz or more vegetation, the medium/heavy would be better.  I personally got a medium/moderate shimano expride glass composite rod for all-round cranking - glass for more parabolic bend to keep the rod loose when setting the hook and preventing an overpowered hook set, with backbone for pulling the fish in (picked it up for $200 during BPS spring sale with trade in) .  I mainly use 1/2 oz cranks and will be fishing open water and near grass.  I prefer the softer action of the medium for casting and retrieve over medium/heavy which is somewhat stiffer; although, it's somewhat of a trade off when the grass comes into play.

No mines not the Crankbait model. The fury has a lot better feel to it and is more sensitive

I have the MH e6x CB rod and use it for all my CB needs.

While there are many comparable options to the E6x J/w,  the Swimbait and CB models are a great value around 150.00 and it is hard to beat the warranty

I have a 7 foot mh cranking e6x and I’m totally not happy with it I’ve fished crankbait rods in the 80 to 100 range that are way better I’m going to be selling it. Don’t recommend it.

Going to go down to the local store today and take a look around. Will have to make a bit of a hike to check out Dobyns Rods before I purchase something. I also have purchased a few rods used off a buddy who was a rep for muliple different company’s and sells off all his old rods when he switches. He has a gl2, and he’s looking for something else he could part with

It’s just super noodles I rather crank with glass or a composite glass.

Thank you everyone, I’ll see if my buddy has anything and if not I’ll make the trip down to either look at a dobyns or pick up one. I know they have a fury 704cb in stock for sure, possibly a 705cb and they have the champion 705cb as well. Another store has an loomis imx pro cbr in stock so I’ll take a look at that

Went to the local store today and they are sold out of almost all Dobyns Rods other then the champion 705cb glass which felt a little heavy and was hoping to get graphite so I don’t think I’ll go that route unless I can find it somewhere else. While I was there I looked at the e6x 845c cbr and a few other e6x’s that didn’t feel all that great but the 845cbr feels pretty good!

 

on my way home from work Monday I’ll stop by the other store where apparently they have an imx pro 845c cbr in stock I’ll take a quick peak at.

 

and meeting with someone tomorrow I believe to look at a used zillion crankbait rod

If you live near a larger Dick's Sporting Goods, they may have one of the glass Mojo Bass cranking rods in stock. Those are nice all-around cranking sticks for around $130, as long as you can fit a rod that long in your car.

Well I ended up buying both the zillion 7’2” cranking rod and the imx pro 845c cbr. Both rods feel great, the zillion I bought first for a great deal and is the reason I couldn’t say no but the rod doesn’t feel like a crankbait rod at all, maybe a deeper diving but it’s way to fast I think. I couldn’t get the imx out of my mind so stopped and picked it up too with plans to try the zillion for something else or sell it to a buddy who’s looking for a new rod

I have two of the 845's and love them. They are great  rods for medium divers and shallow stuff. That rod should be perfect for what your looking for.

Thank you. I’m very excited about this rod. My first higher end loomis rod and I love the feel. Weight and balance of the rod.

 

which 845’s do you have? How do they work with smaller top waters?

The CBR845C. The older style, not the EX6 line. I personally would not use this rod for topwater myself. It would work in a pinch, but it has the feeling of a "true" crank bait rod and I prefer a much faster action with heavier power for top water applications. Not to mention if I'm using any type of walking bait I want a shorter rod. Don't get me wrong I love this rod and own TWO, but is a very technique specific rod for me and that is medium and shallow cranking. I do fish a lipless shallow on one of them from time to time that I have a faster gear ratio mounted on it.

 

It sounds like you made a great decision on the IMX CBR and I'm sure you will be pleased with your purchase for many years to come.
