A little out of the loop on current products. Looking for a true Light thats not a noodle, It doesnt need to be XF or anything but I hate a rod flexing down near the real seat like so many do. Main Technique would be throwing 1/16 oz open hook jigs- shad darts and spro phat flies on most uses, and also an occasional small crank like the bigger yozuri snap bean...In terms of power ballpark, a st croix L would be bordering too stout to give an idea to those familiar with their deal. Length would be over 6' and top out around 7'ish.....And yes spinning. Budgets flexible- would rather not get above $200 or so.

I know, I know, custom is the right way to tackle this most likely- (Ive been wanting to fill this niche for years but never seem to get around to it). The shad runs at the door so thats kinda making a factory rod the route to go. Anyone with anything in mind? Maybe some trout guys or JDM saavy types know a thing or two?

Thanks!

What budget did you have in mind? Awesome I see it now. Dobyns, St Croix, and Phenix makes the best rods for what you are looking. I think the Dobyns 741 may be a bit too powerful but the St Croix UL or Phenix L should be perfect.

The rods that come to mind are the: Dobyns Champion Extreme DX 741SF (1/16-3/8 oz), St Croix Avid AVS70ULF (1/32-3/16 oz), St Croix Premier PS70ULF2 (1/32-3/16 oz), Phenix Bass Recon Elite 6-9 or 7'2 Light (1/16-3/8 oz)

St Croix also makes the rod in a 6'6 but the additional length will aid in casting distance which is necessary at the weight lures you are looking to throw.

Thanks stephen, I'm a fan of the avid and above from S.C., but have only handled the 5' UL (maybe its 5.5' its been awhile, too short regardless). Ive always read and heard good things about the Pheonix's, I may give them a call.

A Croix L is too stiff? That to me is like the perfect power for a 1/16 by the time you had the plastic. Anything lower than that is going to be "whippy". I grabbed a rod for 1/16 oz jigs and went away from a croix L power because it was too flimsy. Sorry I dont have an answer, but I think you're looking at custom.

Another person suggested an UL from croix. IF you look at a 7' UL from them they get real whippy. They bend way down into the blank. I got rid of my 7' UL avid because of this.

Yeah...The baits I listed arent jigs that "add plastic". St Croixs rating runs heavier than most in the industry as everyone knows. Youre not loading a 1/16 snap bean on their "L" rods. I used them as an example since every ones familiar with their powers.

No problem. Yea Phenix seems to run a touch lighter than most in the industry. I would likely go with the 7" St Croix UL or see what some of the staff at Phenix says regarding if any of their offerings would be capable of throwing lures around 1/16 oz effectively.

I fish a Cajun Rod Trigger for my really light weight jig and plastic combos. I have the 6-10 lb rod and it can handle 1/16th with plastic with no issues. I have no doubt the 4-8 lb rod would do 1/16th with no plastic. It is a very easy rod to load but has some backbone to it as well.

For 1/16-3/32 oz hair jigs, I often use a Daiwa Steez XT ML/F. It can cast light lures a good distance, and it handles big smallies very well.

It's more expensive than you specified, but I'm very happy with it.

I have been posting about this rod a lot latley, but every time I use it I like it more and more.  The rod is a “Daiwa DXW Walleye 6'6" Spinning Rod DXW661MLXS” on sale for $45 from ALF.

Dispite the ml label and the 1/16-1/8 weight rating, it will load and cast a Trout Slayer about 30-40’ and a 1/16oz jig as far as any UL I have handled.  Its got a ton of backbone and the build quality is decent to good. For $50 I love it, might pick up a second one as a spare.

I use a G. Loomis GL3 SJR700 for throwing light stuff and love it.

its rated 'mag light' so its got a backbone but a very light tip with an XF action. its rated for 2-8 pound line and up to 1/4oz lures. its one of my favorites.

I also love the TSR trout series of ultralights from loomis (I have the TSR791) but it sounds like that would be too light for what you are looking for.
