BR1AN Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 I got a canoe about a year ago from a family friend. I thought i would use it more but that wasn't the case. It still has the state and numbers sticker on the side (assuming for a motor) they are from the early 90s. Should I remove them before selling it or leave them there? I don't want the previous owner getting some kind of call for God knows what. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted March 22, 2018 Super User Posted March 22, 2018 Only if you intend to sell it to someone who does not intend to put a motor (gas or trolling) on it. Quote
BR1AN Posted March 22, 2018 Author Posted March 22, 2018 I guess I'll just remove them anyway to be safe. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted March 22, 2018 Super User Posted March 22, 2018 In my state if you want to put a motor (gas or electric) on a boat over 14' you have to register it. You have to prove ownership to register it. Anyone buying a used boat should ask for the title or certificate of ownership (sale) if you don't you will have problems down the road. Trust me I know. I learned the hard way that it is almost impossible to track down the original owner without those numbers. Sorry this is a sore spot for me. I think ethically the best way to go is disclose you do not have the title or cert of sale when selling the canoe. It will save some poor Joe a big hassle down the road. Quote

NY requires a title or a cert of sale of a canoe? That's nuts. Quote

NY requires a title or cert of sale to register any boat 14’ or over if you want to put a motor (electric or gas) on it. You don’t need them if you intend to paddle it. long story short. I bought a canoe off of Craig’s list. Owner gave me a written bill of sale. I had no problem with that as I intended to paddle mine. Well last X-mas I got a trolling motor as a gift. I needed to register the canoe to use it and the written bill of sale was not good enough. I asked the guy I bought it from if I could get the name of the person he bought it from to get the title/BOS and he said he doesn’t have contact with him anymore. bottom line is I have to wait 1year from purchase date which will be this September so I can pay a fee and then register the canoe in my name. The year wait is to see if someone reports the canoe as stolen. 1 Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted March 24, 2018 Super User Posted March 24, 2018 In NH we have the same rule, but if a state game officer inspects the canoe you can register it without a title. Who has a title for a 15 year or older canoe? 3 Quote

When I hung a trolling motor on my old Colman, I just sent the state a check for like $15 and they gave me a number...actually...I did it on line. No check. 17 hours ago, deaknh03 said: In NH we have the same rule, but if a state game officer inspects the canoe you can register it without a title. Who has a title for a 15 year or older canoe? Canoes in WI don't have titles... 1 Quote
