Drop shot hook straightness and u tale worm

Hey guys will my hook ups be just as good if my hook is not completely straight on my drop shot I use a u tale worm for drop shotting is this a good choice I’m new to drop shorting I haven’t even used it yet so what do you guys use for a drop shot worm? What would you recommend to me?-Slade

Hey Slade, 

I definitely like my hook to be as straight as possible. Not so much as for hook sets but more for a realistic look to the bait. I tend to use 4 inch  straight tail worms like robo worm and some custom hand pours due to there ability to float which helps them to stay straight. I use #4 or #6 owner mosquito hooks and nose hook the bait. The knot is very important, I use the Palomar knot. After tying the Palomar knot I always take my tag end of the line and run it through the eye of the hook again and pull it tight enough that the Palomar knot sits at the top of the hook eye. There are videos on you tube to show the proper steps.

I’m really good with palomar knots it’s the knot I use for pretty much everything I use it because it’s very simple and fast I made two drop shot rigs 1 has the hook super straight and the other is sort of straight but more curved to the right I use 2/0 octopus hooks. I also do that thing where you put the tag end thru the eye Thanks for the info!-Slade

Robo worm with some sort of mosquito or drop shot style hook. I try to stay away from the octopus hooks but they work in a pinch.

I have never used a U-tail worm on a dropshot. To me, U-tails are moving baits, its got to move to get that tail going.

 

As others have said straight tail Roboworms are great dropshot baits. Others to consider: Zoom Z-drop worms, Biospawn Plasmatails, Yum Warning shots/Kill shots and Strike King Dreamshots/Halfshells.

I find Trick worms to long for a drop shot bait. Now T-rig, C-rig or on a Shakey head and now we are talking!

Trick Worm T-Rigged 4/0 Worm Hook on a Drop Shot can get it done.

Everyone tends to forget that a wacky hooked worm works good on a drop shot rig.

Another factor new drop shooters tend to do is use too big of a hook and too heavy line, this is primarily a finesse rig.

When I wacky rig a bait on a drop shot rig it is usually a 4" senko or smaller. I use that size for the exact reason's you mention as I like lighter line and hooks.
