to sink into a big 'un. Caught some nice striper as well (all on

Nah, it's not you, it's me.  While one certainly would want to get good quality, functional gear most suited to the task, any spinning reel from any of the major manufacturers is more than up to the task of landing any bass. Having used mid range 2500-5000 sized spinning reels from Shimano, Daiwa, Okuma, and others to land some big fish, often having most of the line leave the spool several times, your reference to a 3 lb fish struck me as funny.

Ah yes, the rivers are lots of fun. Lost a red fishing the York about two years ago. One of the most frustrating things that's happened to me while fishing. I've managed to catch a striper there though. Never short of croaker too. Lots of fun for sure.

I guess I was being a little too technical haha. Bad habit of mine. I just had a bad experience with the body of a reel flexing on me once. Then again that was a pretty cheap Bass Pro reel. Daiwa and Shimano however have been good to me. Always more than suitable as you've mentioned.

Step Two...Fish and enjoy that you got a reel that will do everything want it to for a long time without breaking your wallet.

I’d suggest giving a Penn Fierce 2 a shot. I have one in the 2000 size that I use to fish both salt and freshwater. Owned it for two years now and haven’t had any issues. It reeled in my previous PB largemouth (just about 5lbs) and countless saltwater fish (everything from whiting to red drum to sea trout) without an issue. I think I paid something in the neighborhood of $50 for mine.

That’s the BG knockoff. 

They’re all good reels tho. More durable than most.

I own a dozen spinning reels.  All but one are Pfluegers.  Presidents (many) all the way up to a Patriarch XT.

Think you might be mistaking the Fierce for another reel. Fierce 2 was released in 2015 and the BG (newer edition) didn’t show up until 2016. The Penn Battle 2 looks very similar to the new BG, but it was around before the BG as well.

Most of my Reels are in the $100 dollar category but I also own plenty of extreme budget reels; and of all the budget reels I own , I think the Okuma Stratus Has performed the best. The Okuma Stratus SV35 is a Dicks Sporting Goods Exclusive; and is priced at $29.99 on sale this week. They are usually $49.99 but for the sale price , it's an excellent option for double duty bass and light redfish. Or at this price you could buy 2 for $60 and still be in under your budget .

I'd go Daiwa. My next reel is going to be either a Revros (49.99) or RG (59.99). You can find them cheaper than that on amazon and e bay too. These are the budget reels Daiwa offers that still have the Air Rotor that makes their reels so smooth. 

 

I work in a store that handles multiple brands of entry level spinning reels. After handling a lot of them I would put Daiwa ahead of Pflueger which is another brand thrown out a lot. I've noticed multiple quality issues with the new line of Presidents and Monarchs that just came out. I've put together reels that had handle tightening issues and felt rough.

For you, maybe...   I have eight spinning reels on just my ice fishing rods and God knows how many more on my soft water rigs.

 

Since I have long lost track of my reel inventory (I just found a brand new, unused, still-in-the-package fly reel today), I have decided it's time to catalog them.  Some time this week, I'll try to make a record of them.

 

You can never have too many reels!

I have a Pfleuger President (30) that for the most part is a very good reel. However, after less than a year of use on fresh water only the crank became extremely pitted. I contacted Pfleuger (including photos) and they told me it was my fault because I was using sun tan lotion or bug spray and that caused the issue. When I explained to them that I used neither of those when fishing they essentially told me to go pound sand.

 

A few months later I read somewhere that they updated their design because of problems with pitting cranks. Other than that issue, it has been a great reel. But I don't use it that much since I bought a Lew's baitcaster.

Yep ... It includes four little Presidents for ice fishing.  The monkey and I are on a first name basis.

Daiwa Revros for $42 is pretty sweet.
