Budget Spinning Reels

Hey all,

 

Was looking to finally get a spinning rod for finesse fishing. Really just looking for something that can toss some lighter lures. I tend to fish spots with fish that run 3lbs and larger so a good reel is a must; however, I'm not looking to get a Stella though haha. Used a Shimano Sienna for years, and that's been great. However, I wonder if they still make them like they used to. Anything below $100 is good. Anything below $75 is great. Really, anything durable and with minimal flexing in the body of the reel will do. Might also be worth mentioning I plan on using it for the occasional redfish and flounder. Thanks for any recommendations. Cheers!

How budget are we talking?

 

A couple of cheaper options that I find perfectly acceptable are the Pflueger President for $50 to $60 (size 30 for finesse) or if you have a little extra money, the Daiwa BG for $75 to $100 (size 2000 for finesse). Both reels have a proven track record and will last you a while but are heavier than some of the lighter and more expensive options out there (imo, the BG is otherwise comparable to many options twice its price but will likely last longer).

Kastking Sharky III $50 or Kastking Kodiak $70 in the 3000 size.

 

The Sharky has a sealed water resistant frame and the Kodiak is saltwater approved. Both will serve you for bass and redfish/flounder fishing. The Kodiak reel has an aluminum frame where the Sharky III is reinforced graphite.

      Kinda looks like this fills the bill. Recommended for salt water too. Might want the 4000 size if your going to target bull redfish, But for speckled trout or red's under thirty should do just fine.

$75-100 you can pretty much count on Shimano and

Daiwa in those ranges. I'd add Pflueger to the mix, too.

 

As for "finesse", I don't believe there is a "finesse" reel

specifically. You can finesse with any reel, it's all in how

you fish it.

 

I use 1000 size Stradics for *all* of my bass fishing. They

have never once come close to being spooled, and I've 

caught dozens of bass over 6#. If I've needed extra drag

with a particularly feisty fish I use my palm to help.

Pflueger President, President XT, and the Supreme. Have heard good things about the Daiwa Fuego as well. The Shimano Sahara is another really good one, but I stick with Pfluegers these days.

I would go Daiwa BG, I got one over the winter and it feels as smooth as my Ci4+ Shimanos and is built like a tank.  They are on the heavy side, but other then that I am 100% pleased with mine.

You can buy Shimanos right off the rack under 50 & 40 that are exceptional. Own two. Tanks...

 

Believe Shimano is setting up fishermen for the future when they are able to spend more and again will choose Shimano...maybe will always be budget minded and stick with Shimano...still win...

The Shimano NASCI and Daiwa Fuego LT are unmatched. They are very good reels that perform well above there price point.

As a newbie to the forum, all this help is really encouraging. I really appreciate all the insight. I definitely agree about the Daiwa/Shimano reliability. I have a Tatula and I really like it, strong reel. The Sales BG looks really tempting. However, Shimano does make a solid reel. I've had a Sienna for at least 3 years and counting and it's been everywhere. Caught stuff in fresh and salt. Thanks again, cheers!

I have a bunch of budget spinning reels.  Off hand, I know I have a Shimano Symetre, Sahara and Sedona, a Pflueger President, a Daiwa SS Tournament and Opus Plus, a Penn Battle, a couple of Okumas, etc.

 

All are sub-$150 and all have performed well for me.  I don't use spinning reels a whole lot, but my ultralight rigs get a workout.  I don't think you can spend $75-$150 on a name-brand spinning reel and NOT get something pretty darn good.

 

My next budget spinning reel (if I ever need another one!) will be a Daiwa BG.  I have read a lot of great things about them.

I fish almost all budget spinning reels ranging from $30-$70. For the price it's hard to beat a pflueger president.

You mentioned using the reel for some saltwater fishing...  I forgot to mention that I use my Daiwa SS Tournament in saltwater for at least a week every year.  I rinse it each day, service it carefully at the end of the trip and it's been holding up fine for years.  The Daiwa Opus Plus also has seen plenty of saltwater action with no ill effects.

I have a fly fishing buddy who had a great career and did very well for himself.  He's retired now and spends almost all his time fishing, all over the globe.  He said his most enjoyable fishing is for redfish on the gulf coast.  Sounds like you better start hooking into those things... they must be a whole lot of fun!
