MichiganMikee Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 I want my cork to look good for a long time on my new loomis NRX rod thing was 600$ so i would like to not mess it up I ordered some u-40 cork seal good or bad idea and why ? Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 19, 2018 Super User Posted March 19, 2018 It will do the trick for you. I use it on my cork rods, including a St. Croix Legend Tournament. Keeps it in good shape. 2 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 19, 2018 Super User Posted March 19, 2018 It'll keep the cork looking and feeling like new. You can easily remove it with Magic Eraser or fine grit sandpaper. 1 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 19, 2018 Super User Posted March 19, 2018 I use it on all *my* rods. Rods that I purchased at retail. For rods sent to me for evaluation, I leave them unfinished since I want to know how they hold up, and be able to report back to you all on that detail. 1 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 19, 2018 Super User Posted March 19, 2018 Agree, good stuff. Only one coat, as the instructions state. Two will not be better. 2 1 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted March 19, 2018 Super User Posted March 19, 2018 Nope. I use it to clean old cork, and then seal it. 3 Quote
Stephen B Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 I have had a few experiences with U40 that I will detail for those considering using U40. From my experience with the Megabass Destroyer USA and NRX models it shows all the imperfections in the cork, however, it does protect the cork from mud, dirt, debris from getting into the cork. Ultimately, I think that U40 is a great product that does the job it was designed to do. Has anyone else had the same experience? I bought a NRX 853C and the cork looked flawless however after applying U40 the cork didn't look as good. I however would still recommend it! 1 Quote

I've used mineral spirits in the past, but like the idea of a magic eraser better. I have noticed that U-40 seems to make the dark spots on cork look even darker. Where's the best place to get U-40 now. Recently when I've looked online the shipping was more expensive than the product itself. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 19, 2018 Super User Posted March 19, 2018 Mineral spirits will remove the wood filler, too. Magic Eraser is a less harsh. I usually bundle the U-40 in with a bait order from TW. Quote

Magic erasers sound great - what won't those things clean 1 Quote
The Bassman Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 I use denatured alcohol from my painting stuff. Cleans real good and dries immediately so will not dissolve any filler. Quote
Diggy Posted March 20, 2018 Posted March 20, 2018 When I bought my NRX 894, I ordered U-40 with it. No problems at all although I was worried I'd mess up the application. Very easy to apply. I used it on a few other rods before I did something to dry out the tub of u-40. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 20, 2018 Super User Posted March 20, 2018 I should mention, don't toss the Styrofoam seal. Gently peel it back, and stick it in the lid. That'll keep it from drying out. I know from experience. Very disappointing to go to seal cork, and its dry. 1 Quote
bigfruits Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 i clean the cork with Dawn soap and warm water, let dry and apply a coat of U40 on all of my rods. Quote
Shimano_1 Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 I agree it does what it is supposed to do. It does change the look of the cork and in my experience the feel slightly. Having said that I always use it on new cork! Quote
