6'8" vs 6'10" jerkbait rod

I just searched around a bit reading old threads, but I just figured I'd ask because it's pretty specific.. 

I'm looking at the falcon bucoo rod for a jerkbait/top water..(bladed jig and finesse jig??)

 

I am looking for opinions on which one.. 6'8" MH/mod.fast or 6'10" MH/Mod. Fast 

 

I throw anything from a pointer 78, vision 110, pointer 100, kvd jerkbaits 200/300.. so basically 3/8oz to 5/8oz.. 

--.. how much would casting distance differ between these two?

--could I also throw bladed jig on this set up?

It does sound perfect,  except the price!! A little out of my price range.. Maybe some day..  I'm pretty set on one of these two rods.. 

Does anyone know how they compare in power vs a Shimano? What I mean is,  are falcons MH as stiff as Shimano MH?

Cabela’s Tournament ZX Topwater/Jerkbait rod is 6’9” it’s a medium fast. I have one and I love it a little on the heavy side of medium.

Sorry, I should have read the question closer.......I would take the 6’10” as it will be a dit more versatile

I looked at that a while back at Cabela's.. it is a nice rod, but I can't stand the white!! Idk why I can't get over it, haha but man they don't appeal to me!

I am kind of leaning towards the 6'10" but it's only rated for 5/8oz whereas the 6'8" is rated for 3/4oz.. I think a pointer 100 is 5/8oz so idk if it'd be maxing out the 6'10"..

I'm with you brother!    BTW, belated Happy Birthday.  Afraid I can't help with your question other than to say I normally prefer a longer rod.  But that is a personal preference.

Thanks man!! Appreciate it.. no worries, I think I'm leaning towards the 6'10".. but I already have a 6'10"MH/F Shimano exage, so idk if it'd be to redundant to get the 6'10"bucoo..

I mostly fish from the bank right now, so I try not to have to many rods.. I usually only bring 1-2 baitcaster and 1 spinning setup when I go.. so having to many makes it hard to pick which to bring!

Unless your facing tight quarters where you might actually have to pitch your bait (I’ve had to pitch crank and jerk baits), I will err on going with the longer rod. I’m also a bank angler and hence my preference for a longer rod as a general rule. 

 

PS the bait monkey solution is to get both.

I prefer a slightly shorter rod for jerk baits and top water because I work the tip downwards. I also fish from the bank, kayak, and back of buddies boat. The shorter rod is a more maneuverable on the yak and boat. In the end, it's personal preference and either will work.

The bucoos are rated light I feel like. I have a 7'4 heavy and it is no where near what I consider a heavy power. But I think you are looking at the correct power rods for jerkbaits. They do have a little more flex to them as in their fast is more of a mod-fast. I would prefer the 6'10 because you could cast it just a bit farther and be a bit more versatile

I wish I could get both, but the boss might wish otherwise!!

I think I'm going to go with the 6'10".. hopefully the rod is as good as the reviews on tackle warehouse.

I've heard the 6'10 makes a good all around rod for stuff under 3/4 ounce.

I use a 6’8 medium fast mojo, perfection!

I also use a 6”10 ghost those rods are not rated but they are a lot stiffer more like a medium extra fast I use it for soft plastic jerk baits because I sometimes use a heavy wire hook and I need more hook setting power.

6’8 for the bank is optimal!

I would go with shorter, stouter rod for jerkbaits without a doubt.  Especially if you do a lot of bank fishing.  Last thing you want to do is whack the tip on the bank/rock and it's easier to cast.     Maybe you are 6' 6" tall then the 6' 10" rod might not be a problem!    I'm 6' 2" and I use a 6' 6" gloomis.   3/4 oz.   I think it's great as I do a lot of bank fishing also.

I see you are looking at the Bucoo SR models.  I have no experience with any Bucoo model.  I have a few of the older Experts, a Cara and an Original (had another Original stolen).  MY PB was landed on a MH Original.  From what I see Falcons have a bit more of a parabolic bend than some rods.  Hammer rods remind me of Falcons.  Both seem to fish a bit lighter than their ratings.

 

The 6'10" model is rated 3/16-5/8 oz. while the 6'8" is rated 1/4-3/4 oz.  Considering you will be fishing 3/8-5/8 oz. lures, I would go with the 6'8" model to stay well within the rod's rating.  However, like I said, I have no experience with the Bucoos.  I would think the 6'10" model CroakHunter mentioned would be the HF model which is rated to 3/4 oz.  The other 6'10" models are only rated to 5/8 oz.  Maybe they can handle 3/4 oz.  I don't know.  I prefer to switch rods rather than fish a rod at either end of its rating.  However, some rods easily exceed their ratings...per TT reviews I have read.

I wouldn't use a moderate fast rod for jerkbaits. You'll get a lot more control and have to work far less hard with a faster tip, and, oddly, you won't lose more fish. I always use an XF rod for jerkbaits.

Without getting into brand specifics, I like a 6'6" M power rod with a fast action, that ever so slightly leans to the moderate fast side of the bell curve. For several reasons, #1 I often hit the side of the boat with a longer rod when using downward "jerks", a shorter rod eliminates this. #2 I often am working jerkbaits around, or over top of grass that's just getting going in the early spring, and a whippy rod often loads up instead of snapping it off any grass it might hang on. Also more moderate rods tend to impart less action to the bait, as the rod is flailing around. But having "some tip" is also an important factor, especially when trying to fling a light jerkbait a long ways across a flat in the wind. A little rod load on the cast is a big help here.

Yep. I actually use a 6'8" MXF Mojo spinning rod for jerkbaits and poppers.

I use a 6'6" rod!  I dont lose a great deal of distance.  It is lighter which makes it easier to work all day on a hot jerkbait bite.

It seems this is an often debated topic.. I have a MH fast that I use for light flipping and a few other things.. I just thought the moderate fast would be a good compromise where I could use for more techniques seeing how I don't often fish out of a boat, so keeping the number of rods down to a minimal is important..

68, 610 whatever but it really depends on the length of that handle because you can have a 610 rod with a 15 inch handle that rod will be like using a 67,68 rod.
