coloring braid

I was watching a show with KVD and he was showing how he colored his braid with a black sharpie. he was fishing a frog. I have a problem with this. as I see it, if you color the line black there is more contrast with the sky than just leaving it alone. seem that on cloudy days, grey line would be better. on sunny days blue or green would seem to blend in with the sky better than black. agree? disagree?

I can't imagine any scenario in which you'd want to color the braid. Using a Sharpie is the height of foolishness as it's not quite as 'permanent' as they claim - it'll leak the chemicals into the water and might degrade the strength of the line.

 

Want different colored braid? Buy it and spool it up.

Its not about the color, its about breaking up a uniform continuous color. There is a reason tigers and zebras have stripes. I haven't found LMB to be line shy in the least, but other fish certainly are.

I can see that in a way, but there's gotta be a better option than a Sharpie, something that doesn't leach harmful chemicals into the water that the fish can 'taste' and go "Nope, not biting on what ever THAT is."

Do to my my getting older, I really hate to admit that one, my vision just ain't what it used to be. As a line watcher, I lose dark colored lines, they blend in very well with the surroundings. After KVD came to our store and spoke on this topic, I started using hi-vis braid on my jig and texas rig rods. I color the last 10' or so with a black, chisel tip, Sharpie. Works great for me as I can see my line now and I haven't noticed a decline in my catch rate at all.

i see no point in coloring braid.  If your worried run a leader and if not then dont.  Black is the most visible color and what you run on a jig or worm in low visibility.

Harmful chemicals? It's just a dang marker.

You do know that all braid starts out white and is dyed with chemicals, yes? and I've been coloring hard baits with sharpies for years, and the fish apparently like the taste...

I agree with you that most largemouth bass are not very picky when it comes to fishing line. I  recently caught a +7 pound, 24 inch bass on a 100 pound test mono leader as bycatch while fishing for big snook. I use this heavy line since snook ( especially the big ones) have a sharp gillplate that can easily cut smaller sized lines. Have also caught other bass with very thick mono leaders or wire leaders while targeting other species.

If I have some braid that  is faded that I have already reversed, I use Spike It Garlic Dye. Just thread your braid thru an old slip sinker, hold the tag end & drop the sinker into the dye. Then pull however much you want to dye thru the sinker. They have a lot of colors now so I sometimes alternate every 2 ft to break it up - camo & scent. Disposable gloves are a must.
