2tall79 Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 Happens every year about this time. The frogs in the wetland across the street ALL started croaking last night. After a couple of warm days, it's like somebody throws a switch. It won't be long now. 6 Quote

We call those little guys "Peepers" here in MA and aside from the Bard Owls whooting in the spring those tree frogs singing is just music to my little bass fishing ears! Thanks for restoring a little of my hope that in spite of 3 Nor'easters in less than two weeks Spring really will return. 2 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted March 14, 2018 Super User Posted March 14, 2018 Have to be sufficient to see Bluebirds and Robins in the yard. Spring is not here but it is right around the corner. 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted March 14, 2018 Super User Posted March 14, 2018 Had a robin in the yard about a week ago. One. I think I saw him headed back towards NC. 2 Quote

When I was a kid I loved to listen to the frogs croaking after a big rain. I would wake up in the middle of the night when there was a big storm. When it was over I would listen to them through the open window until I fell asleep. 5 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 15, 2018 Global Moderator Posted March 15, 2018 Frogs croaking are always my first sign that spring is actually getting close. Never understood the robin thing. They must never leave here because I see more of them during the winter hopping around on the snow than I do during the summer. 4 Quote
FishDewd Posted March 15, 2018 Posted March 15, 2018 Spring is basically here along the gulf coast, TX. How I know: 1.) if the skeeters are biting, the fish are too! 2.) my baobab trees are sprouting 3.) the wild "field onions" are putting up flower stalks 4.) The black berry vines have grown their first green buds of the year 5.) the squirrels have returned with a vengeance 6.) it is regularly hitting 75-80* during the days Yes sir... getting very close indeed! Hang in there all you frozen, icicle ridden fellows! Spring WILL return, and soon! If not, I give you permission to plunge me in an icy lake! 5 Quote

Rpratt Posted March 15, 2018 Posted March 15, 2018 Old farmers thing here in Midwest. The frogs will come out and croak, and then cold snap. Repeat process 3 times, then spring is here. Sounds silly but it really does seem to work ? 2 Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted March 15, 2018 Super User Posted March 15, 2018 Was out golf ball hunting earlier this week and it started snowing...after a bit the little frogs started their little dry throat ed chirping noise!!! This was a first for me. 2 Quote

Still waiting to see our first Robin Red Breast. There's been a pair that nests in a spruce right outside the kennel for a few years now. I miss them. A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User Gundog Posted March 15, 2018 Super User Posted March 15, 2018 Saw my first robin a week ago. He was frozen solid and laying on my porch. Too late for the poor lad but if I was smarter I'd take the hint and fly south and not return. 1 Quote

Robins (at least some of them) stay all year here in the Adirondacks, too. You just don't see them hopping around in your yard after they give up their worm diet when the ground is frozen and covered in snow. I often see them in the thick cedars when I'm grouse hunting in the winter months. I've brought one home to prove it to a nay-sayer in the past. Those little frogs --we call them "spring peepers" around here-- are a welcome sign of Spring. Then come the black flies! =:-0 Tight lines, Bob 1 Quote

A-Jay We get them all year long... some just stay here, others migrate from up north and winter here. We get snow geese by the thousands too. Saw a few wasps buzzing around yesterday in our 70° sunshine. Haven't seen a robin yet, and that is unusual. Snow is forecast overnight tonight. Welcome to springtime in Colorado. 1 Quote

desmobob Posted March 15, 2018 Posted March 15, 2018 Our forecasted low temps for Saturday and Sunday night are 5* and 6*. After tonight, it's not supposed to get above freezing until next Thursday afternoon (after the next forecasted snowstorm!). Maybe I should stop messing around with my bass stuff and get my ice fishing gear back out... Tight lines, Bob 1 Quote
