The Guido Bug

 Is a lure created by Dion Hibdon and used by Guido to win a Bassmaster tournament at Lake of the Ozarks .  It was formed from a real  crawdad using  Plaster of Paris and pouring in plastic . I still use   the ones that were mass produced but have a limited supply , I dont believe they are being produced anymore . What I lked the best about them is they were completely smooth  . If I was in question if I just had a bite all I had to do  was look at the bait . If a bass bit , it always left teeth marks that were very easy to see on the "Bug".

I have a partial pack of the big black ones and a partial pack of small brown ones . I used the little ones for river smallmouths the big ones for for reservoir largemouths .

Although The Guido Bug is world renowned Mr Hibdon is better know down here for introducing us to the Tube Bait!

Like many of the early pros, he was a pioneer of new baits and techniques. My early reading included many articles highlighting his use of tube baits. I’ve used them for everything from perch to Muskie. 

Like many sports, youngsters should acknowledge those that paved the way for their success and enjoyment of the sport.

In my opinion Guido was one of the all time best! I fished the baby Guido bug a lot years ago, and caught some decent fish on this bait. I have a very few left. Wish they would make them again

Not exactly the same, but the zoom critter craw is pretty close substitute!

 

I was sad to hear of Guido's passing, he truly was a LOZ legend. Even non fishermen knew of him.

Great post! Like you I'm down to just a few. Soft. Obvious teeth marks would get in them but didn't tear real easy. 

 

I bent over backwards years ago to find them. No luck. I've only fished the smaller 3" for River smallies. 

 

Have a lot of good memories with that bait. Pumpkin orange  claw & black w/ blue claw.

I have a good stash of 4" in black with chartreuse claws!!! It is one of the only soft plastic craws I fish on a jig with no skirt. I'm not sure why it works so much better than all the other craws I've tried like that but I believe it has something to do with the profile and the way it sits when it hits the bottom. It doesn't stand very long and it begins to slowly fall and that is when the majority of my strikes come. I also do well with it on a T-rig and it is the craw I use when the water is dirty.

i remember an episode of bassmaster when he was skipping tubes on a 1/16 oz head under docks around cables etc. i was in college working at a tackle shop at the time and we sold the crap out of tubes for a month after that.

The closest I can get to the old Guido Bug is the Zoom Critter Craw.But I do wish the Guido Bug was still around.
