tfransi Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Hey everyone! I just bought a 1996 17' Basstracker with a 40HP Force motor on it. The man I bought it from had not used it in almost 2 years. Since it had not been used recently I decided to go ahead and do all the preventive maintenance that I thought it needed. I changed the water pump impeller, the lube in the lower unit, drained and put new gas in it, and changed the plugs. After doing this it starts right up and idles just fine but it does not spit alot of water out at idle. If i put it in gear and bring the rpm's up a little it spits more out then. I am doing this in my yard with the water hose hooked up to it. Is this right or should it be spitting out a good bit of water? I want to take it and put it in the lake and see how it does but I don't want to risk having it overheat. How can I tell it the installation is ok and it is pulling enough water through it? Thanks! CGH Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 I had a 1976 Johnson Seahorse 50 HP that also sat for some years (8 1/2) judging by the reg stickers on the boat. I did the same things and got the same results that you did with a set of muffs and the waterhose. I didn't put the boat in gear was told that it would be a bad idea due to not enough water getting pumped into the system using the muffs. I took the boat (Falcon Tiger) to the lake and it ran find with plenty of water being pumped out both at idel and at cruising speed. Did'nt run it at WOT untill i felt comfortable with my repair job. Still have the 50 Sitting in the storage but the Boat I'm sad to say had to be put Down :'( Quote
frogtog Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Did you put the water pump back together the right way. If I am not mistaking there is a plate in there with a small hole and a large hole and it can be put on upside down. This is just a thought because it has been a long time since I have seen one. George Welcome Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 She will only spit and sputter on muffs. Put it in the water. Quote
bassboy1 Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Here is an excellently done link, by boatbouy, on forums.iboats.com. (hope I cited it correctly) Folks should read this every time they are reviving a dormant outboard. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086 Quote
