I'm usually a hard-core researcher when it comes to buying new gear.  But today I found a great deal on an Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 7' MF casting rod; the micro guide version ($48).

Now that I'm finally doing a little research on the rod, I'm finding a disturbing number of reports of guide failures on that rod series; inserts breaking and falling out, etc.

The vast majority of my rods are Kistlers and I've been extremely happy with them, but I wanted to pick up a low-priced rod for a new low-priced reel.  Did I make a mistake choosing the Veritas?

I've got a 2.0 7'MHF that I love.  It did lose the tip insert....BUT, only because I was trying to dislodge a jig from an overhanging branch with the rod tip.  I've otherwise used it hard for 2-3 seasons with zero other concerns.

I personally don’t have one but I’ve heard that with the lower end micro guides you can have some problems with them breaking. Now I have no idea what guides they have or anything but I’ve heard that the cheaper micro guides sometimes break.  The veritas is a popular rod so it seems like they must be decent.  Good luck!

Every time I get a low price rod for a low price reel I end up upgrading the rod and then the reel and it turns into two combos but I still have the old combo and it goes on and on buying new ones.:)

I've had no issues with the 2.0.  The Gen 1 on the other hand, snapped in half without abuse.

Love my veritas 2.0 but I don’t have the micro guide model. I wouldn’t worry about the reports if you already bought it. All you can do is try it out for yourself.

Funny how that works, isn't it?  Same thing happens to me...

I have had a Veritas 2.0 6’9 MH/F with micro guides since June with no problems. It’s taken a lot of beating in and out of the back of my truck and getting tossed around in my little boat.

I have the 2.0 7'3" mh with micro guides. Had it for a few years now. Absolutely no problems and I've taken it bushwacking through thickets many, many times. Take care of it and you'll be fine

Thanks; that's reassuring.  I treat my rods pretty well.  They always have a rod sock on them when not being used and they ride in a carpeted rod locker in my boat.  I've never lost a guide insert on any of my rods and I hope my luck holds out!

Ive got a buddy that abuses his gear and he fishes several and has had no problems.  I'd say for that money fish the heck out of it and don't worry about it!

For what it's worth, I've only heard good things from owners on here. For $48, fish it, enjoy it and if you have any issues, maybe try a Berkley Shock next time or whatever, and you'll still come out a head of paying retail.

I have a 2.0 M Veritas never had issues with the guide inserts but it’s more like MH rod to me so that is how I fish it.

Thanks Tom.  Before I chose the rod, I did read that they fished a little heavy; that's why I bought the Medium.  Does your rod have the micro or standard eyes?  Do you like it?

It have the micro. I like it. I mostly use it for ripping lipless cranks out of grass in the spring using braid. It’s pretty sensitive for bottom contact also. Not a bad rod at all for the money.

My 7' MF Veritas 2.0 micro arrived today.  It was ordered from Fisherman's Factory Outlet and sold as "reconditioned."  It arrived promptly and was safely packed.  It looks absolutely perfect; I examined it very carefully and could not find any evidence of it being anything but new.  Actually, I was pretty impressed with the fit and finish and surprised how light the rod was.

I put a Tatula 100H on the reel seat and took it out in the back yard for some casting on the snow.  I have to agree with popular opinion that the rod is under-rated.  It feels like a MH to me.  Anyway, it casts great and I noticed right away that the rod seems very sensitive.

The majority of my rods are currently Kistler; most all from their KLX line.  For a rod selling for less than half their price, this Veritas seems like an excellent value.  The proof is in the pudding, and I'll have more basis for my opinion after I get to fish with it.  I'm looking forward to it... I'm hoping I'll be able to get out on the water in a couple more weeks.  Come on, Spring!

I have more than a dozen Abu Rods, six of which are Veritas (first through current).  I had a 2.0 break just before the second to top eye like other reviewers reported.  Bass Pro replaced it no questions.  I wouldn't worry about it at all.

I also own a few Kistlers - love them but  I use my 7' M/F casting and spinning Veritas the most.
