Best spinning rod for wacky rig in heavy cover

I typically fish with two rods one for Texas rig the other for wacky. In the past I've always done 7 ft MH F for both but not sure what is best for my wacky set up. I do fish heavy cover, in MA and NH, every time and use green braid line.

 

Whats the best spinning rod (length and action) and braid (lb. test and brand) for wacky rig in heavy cover?

Define heavy cover.

 

I use ML St. Croix, and M power spinning rods in

the 5'9-6'6" range for all my spinning setups.

 

Only MH I have is a casting rod.

 

*However*!! I will probably end up buying a MH

spinning rod in the future.

 

In the mean time, I've not had any problems brining

in bass in heavy cover (6.6# bass in avatar was in

a stumpy/bushy submerged field). Caught it with a

1000 Stradic and 5'9" Shimano Compre. 10# braid 

and a 10# Yo-Zuri Hybrid leader.

x2 I have never had a problem with a medium or medium light for wacky and I’ve had them run straight into the cover.  I also don’t use spinning over medium, at that point I just use a baitcaster.

I don't fish wacky rigs in heavy cover, but I do use a 7'0" MH-F spinning rod for light texas rigs in moderate-to heavy vegetative cover (yes, folks, the right spinning rod can handle somewhat-heavy cover). 

 

If you told me, "choose a MH spinning rod right this second, off the top of your head", I'd go for a St. Croix Mojo Bass 7'1" MH-F "power spin", MJS71MHF. I base this on my complete satisfaction with a 6'9" M-XF st. croix for wacky rigs in light to moderate cover.

I’m like those above and primarily use spinning/medium power for wacky fishing.  A couple exceptions for me when I’m heavier cover have been:

 

• Daiwa Tatula 7’-1” MH XF.  Tip on this one is really sensitive for detecting light wacky bites where they just kind of suck it in and hard to tell if somethings there.  Can usually tell with this rod.  More backbone than a medium power rod to get the fish out of cover.

 

• I know you said spinning, but I have used two 6’-10” baitcasting rods for occasional close quarter wacky fishing in weeds/cover.  One is Shimano Zodias Medium (but rated to 3/4 oz so between most medium and medium-Heavy rods) and the other a Lews Custom Speed Stick 6-10 MHF.  Coupled with a Tatula SV reel and you can also skip fairly well with this set up.

I have a dobyns champion 683sf for throwing senkos only, wacky or tex.  It has a pflueger supreme with 15# yellow slick 8 on it with a 8 or 10# flouro leader.

 

I dont hesitate to throw it anywhere i can get it in to.  Its one of the rods i have on deck year round, unless i am fishing deep ledges. I like the yellow braid for line watching, and leader for better abrasion reaistance. 

 

Love the rod, it was definitly worth saving up for. Has had plenty of backbone to pull fish from everything ive thrown into. Great tip and action. Was my first champoin rod, now have 2 and looking for a 3rd soon.

lily pads, bass grass, rock piles, stumps, fallen trees.

 

A lot of my fishing is casting from a boat towards the shore, often times less than two feet of water- typically use Texas rig for that but want to use wacky rig more

I think you can get away with a MF or even a MXF rod

for those features. Consider a St. Croix, they tend to be

a tad stiffer than other models with similar ratings.
