So my recently purchased Ci4 has a bad grinding sound to it (almost sure its a bad bearing). Lesson learned on buying a display model but do you guys think the Sustain is worth the 70 dollar upgrade?

Ball bearing supported spool

Carbon drag washers

Xprotect

Those seem to be the upgrades. I wade fish almost exclusively so the xprotect has my interest peaked.

On my FK I am going to upgrade to carbon drag washers and a bearing to support the spool. If I get the Sustain I wouldnt have to do that to the new reel.

I have a few Stradic FK’s and they’ve treated me well for my Inshore fishing needs. Sold off my Ci4+ FB’s this offseason, I just preferred the extra heft and solid feel of the FK’s for the type of fishing I do. Picked up a Sustain FI a couple weeks ago, has not seen the water yet though. Striper season just opened in NJ so I’m excited to put some fish on it. Supposedly there is a Stradic SW coming soon, priced between the Ci4 and Sustain.

Here’s a pretty informative, but long, video comparing Shimano’s Core Protect (Ci4+) and X-Protect (Sustain).

A bearing and new drag washers costs about $10-$15. I really don't think it's worth the extra money, personally. The Stradics hold up pretty well as they are, as long as you're not dunking them in the salt.

I am sure I have watched just about every video he has put out!! Love that channel!!

I have given serious thought to just adding another FK to the mix but I do find the MGL rotor turns a bit easier than the FKs rotor does. Thats another thing with the Sustain is aluminum and carbon mix instead of all carbon.

One of the more informative channels I’ve come across. He does great, in-depth reviews. He’s been talking up the Daiwa LT line of spinners. I’m tempted to try one but I think I’ve grown into a Shimano fanboy, at least for spinning reels.

I have thought about an LT but the Tatula has no seals. Also none of my local shops carry the Ballistic and being unfamiliar with them I am hesitant to buy sight unseen.

Plus I am kind of a Shimano fanboy

If you want quality and a sealed main shaft, you can get a Luvias for $199 on the bay...just saying...

Due to a previous experience I dont shop Ebay plus I have $230 in credits at my local shop due to the returned Ci4.

I have looked at that reel MANY times. Have you fished one?

I have a Luvias 3012H that I got for that same price last year...it is the nicest spinning reel I own aside from the Sterling Silver Tatula LT and then the Ci4+.  The drag is butter smooth and I like the larger spool on the 3012H for less line twist and throwing lighter baits.  It's on a 7'6" Cronos M/ML XF.

I have the 2500H. I think it's an incredible reel, for that price, and I like it better than my Stradic. Though, I wouldn't pay full retail for one, especially if it didn't have the shallow air spool.

Checked with my local store today he isn't able to order a Luvias.

So I guess I am back to Ci4 vs Sustain.
