Small Texas Rig Rod

Would you guys prefer casting or spinning for small texas rigged craws? Right now I’m using a MF spinning setup. Thanks!

Avid 6'8" mxf casting for me. Works great for anything over 1/8oz weight and worm. I have a champion 683 spinning for weightless senkos.

a MH casting rod should be good for 1/4-3/8oz plus plastic. both spinning and casting will work. pitching with spinning is very easy just not as subtle. ill lightly press my left index finger on the spooled line to slow it down.

 

i'd opt for a MH or a Med on the heavier side (St. Croix). XF or F.

 

ive used and recommend these:

 

MB Destroyer Daemos

NRX 852 or 852s (lightest id go)

st croix avid or better 68mxf

old loomis BCR or BSR 803 GLX (you would have to find these used)

 

haven't used these but id look into them:

Conquest 843 (if money is no object)

NRX 853 

new GLX 803 (or 853 if it exists)

1/8 oz bullet weight + hook + 5" finesse worm weighs over 3/16 oz and suitable for most basic bass 3 to 4 power or MH rod using 8 lb to 12 lb line. Use whatever reel type your prefer spinning or baitcasting.

No reason to use high end very expensive rods if your budget doesn't allow for it. Lots of excellent rods availble today between $100 to $150.

Let us know what you prefer to use and ball park budget and you will get lots of recommendations.

I am looking to get my oldest son a rod for his birthday for soft plastics and paddle tail swimbaits and torn between a M/F, M/XF and MH/F myself. All three will work, it's just what else you can use it for.

 

As far as spinning vs casting, it's total preference. I have used a M/F spinning rod for texas rigs, and I have used a MH/F casting rod as well. The spinning rod is often easier in a small boat like a canoe where you can get above your target and want a vertical presentation, but if I am casting it out, I'd prefer a casting rod. At the end of the day, having both available for different presentations and different times of the day is nice.

Each rod maker rates their rods differently, no standards exist. What this means is the nuances between fast and extra fast is impossible to determine without knowing specific rod models and brands unfortunitly.

The slower the action the more the rod bends from tip down about 1/3 rd, power ratings are lifting dead weights before bottoming out and over stressing the rod. The problem with power is no weight standards or rod upward position exists, it's generalized.

With baitcasting reels the slower action rods tend to be easier to learn to cast.

I should add that this is not his first casting rod.He has an Ugly Stik he learned to cast on which is usable as a most moving bait stick, so MH/F seems like it would be the way to go but should I go with a M/F rod I can get a shock for $22 right now too. We also as a group don't currently have a true M/F casting rod either, so there's that.

 

I'm open to any brands, probably in the $100-150 range. I have mostly Tatula casting rods and those are the ones that usually make it into the car with me, so I probably will get something different just to tell them apart.

 

I was considering a Fenwick HMG M/F which is like a solid MH/F from any other brand. That seems like a decent rod for $100, but I would say it's at least as strong as the Elite Tech Bass MH/F. I also found a great deal on a Shimano Zodias, but that's a serious almost heavy rod right there, not sure if it'll be a little too heavy.

Major Craft NAC-T681M/Sl is 6'8" Medium fast action, 1/4-1/2 oz lures, 8 lb to 15 lb line, Don Iovino Splash-It rod. This bait casting  rod is really a multi purpose medium power bass rod and a perfect small T-rigged 5" to 6" worm rod,  along with being a top water and 1/2 oz crank bait rod.

Thanks! I will check it out should I go the M/F route. Sounds like a true M/F rod.

If the cover is not too thick, your spinning rod will be just fine.

 

Mix in any amount of moderate cover, and stepping up to a MH powered casting rod will up your chances of getting the fish out of it, and in the boat. 

 

I pitch 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 oz weighted t-rigged worms and craws around  shallow docks/wood/grass all the time with a MH casting rod.

 

If I move away from the cover into deeper, more open water, I'll fish those same rigs on lighter line and a M power spinning rod.

Yeah I know you want better graphite for bottom contact but unfortunately I’m not made of money :/

Thanks for all the replies! I’m planning on getting a Lews Custom Lite Speed stick so I can throw it on that. Currently I have it on a Lews Mach 1 Combo.

I currently have an ugly stik elite casting rod but obviously thats not very sensetive lol its a 7 MHF but I’m using it for moving baits and cranks becauss you dont need as much sensitivity
