Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted March 1, 2018 Global Moderator Posted March 1, 2018 I'd say a solid 4 Quote
Backroad Angler Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 Yeah honestly to me it looks like a high 3.7-4.4 Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted March 1, 2018 Super User Posted March 1, 2018 I’d say about the 4 to 4-1/2 pound range. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted March 1, 2018 Super User Posted March 1, 2018 Probably in the 4 range if I had to guess. Nothing against you but hold the fish closer to yourself if you want people try to give you accurate weights. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 1, 2018 Super User Posted March 1, 2018 And next time don't hold it by the belly. That helps in our analysis... Oh, and next time bring your scale!! My guess, 3.5-4.5. 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted March 2, 2018 Super User Posted March 2, 2018 Your reel has line, use it the measure the bass by cutting pieces that equal the length and another for the girth. Length X Length X Girth divid by 1200 = weight in lbs. When you hold a fish out arms length toward the camera it looks bigger then it is. Tom 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 I rarely weigh fish as I'm always in a hurry to take a pic and get them back in the water. I do, however, measure any fish i think may be over 18in. I have a tape measure decal on my boat's gunnel and I put a small piece of masking tape on my rod 18in. from the butt. I'd venture a guess that fish is over 18in.maybe closer to 20in. putting it between 4.0 and 4.5 Then again, I caught a 23in. that I thought was at least 7lb. turned out to be 6lb.7oz. so don't rely on my estimate. Nice, healthy fish BTW Quote
Super User JustJames Posted March 2, 2018 Super User Posted March 2, 2018 That a solid 4-5 lbs fish for sure. Congrat, Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted March 2, 2018 Super User Posted March 2, 2018 Almost 4, or 12... Quote
mattkenzer Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 I think the guesstimates above have you close. HOWEVER, sometimes the estimated weight of a good bass story can change depending on who is asking ...... Quote
Super User senile1 Posted March 2, 2018 Super User Posted March 2, 2018 I agree with the under 5 lb guesses. It appears to not have the girth to make 5 lbs. Quote
Florida Cracker2 Posted March 6, 2018 Posted March 6, 2018 I don't use a scale, I just measure on a ruler sticker and go by length. Not accurate...but hey, it's my fish story. Quote
Louise Reid Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 TPWD here in Texas has collected thousands of fish, made this chart to give one an average weight for each length. I have found it to be very accurate. Yes, there are also formulas that consider girth and this adds another important metric. If a man is 6' tall, we could make a rough guess, if we know his waist is 32", we'd be able to make a more informed prediction. Super User WRB Posted March 8, 2018 Super User Posted March 8, 2018 I don't believe the bass in the photo is over 17" based on 3 finger held tight together being 2", about a 3 lb bass. Tom 1 Quote
OCdockskipper Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 I'm with Tom, it is about a 3 lb bass. It only felt like 5lbs because you long armed it for the camera, which after a few moments makes things feel heavier than they actually are. Pick up a 16lb bowling ball and hold it near your chest, elbow bent - you can hold it there for an hour. Now try to hold that same ball with your arm extended - after a few moments, your elbow will snap at the joint and you will never be able to use a baitcaster again... 1 Quote

Tom You guys are tough, if you say his 3 fingers is about 2" then that bass could be around 20" that transfer to close to 4lbs. It is also his first big bass so I gave him another lb benefits so 4-5 lbs sound just right. I have seenanglers post with fish where his hand bigger than his face and claim such and such weight all the time. 2 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted March 8, 2018 Super User Posted March 8, 2018 Its definitely under 6 lbs . Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted March 20, 2018 Super User Posted March 20, 2018 It would be best to buy a digital scale along with a tape measure and always bring it with you on your fishing trips. That way you will know for certain how much a bass weighs. Most of the 5-5.5 pounders I have caught are somewhere around 20-22" inches in length, the bass you showed in this picture appears to be less than 20" so I would say your bass should be above 3.0 pounds but under 4.5. 1 Quote
