I want to get in to deep diving crankbaits this year.  by deep...I mean....20ft +

question.....does color matter?   I know water clarity plays in to this.....but at 20ft+......does color really matter?

and if you think it does.....what color(s) do you prefer?  right now I'm looking at the Dredger series from Berkley

thanks....

Almost all my crankbaits are Lucky Craft, and one color: MS American Shad.  That pattern covers the spectrum for me.  The only time I get a few colors is for flat sided baits.  Even then, it's usually a red, a dark, and a light pattern.  I fish cranks A LOT.  I'm real fussy about lines, rods, and reels to throw each size (I have 8 cranking sticks now, lol) but don't really get too caught up in the color game.  From the Dredger line, I like Big Money and Sexy Back.

I dont know how much color matters .   I  catch lots of bass from 15 to 23 foot with Fire tiger and others  patterns with chartreuse in it from stained water .

My theory on a deep diver is to match the forage. At depth those colors begin to fade (see the image) but I still get bit on the way down and on the way back up to the boat where color might be a factor.

As seen by HUMAN eyes....

Also @scaleface, I dig that hammered copper blade thumper in the background.  That dog hunts, I bet. ;)

Color only matters "when it matters"...The rest of the time it isn't very important.

Fish YOUR favorite pattern or color and it will probably work just fine.

If “matching the forage” mattered I would be screwed big time, there are no tilapia/mirror carp patterned cranks nowhere.

I don't know if it does or not...

BUT

I like my deep diving cranks to be different than my shallow cranks. For none other than the simple reason that every time I buy a deep diving crank in a color that I like in a shallow crank, I don't do well with it, and vise-versa when I buy shallow cranks in colors that I like in deep cranks.

For example, my go-to shallow crank colors are all some form of bluegill, perch, shad, or crawfish color.

And my deep diving cranks, are usually all heavy on chart, white, or blue colors.

There are a few exceptions, like Sexy Shad/Chart Sexy Shad....that seems to work well in both, as does a brown or blue back with chart belly. I can't buy a bite on a deep running Chart. black back deep diving crank, but it's a go-to dirty water shallow crank for me.

Back in the 70's  Blakemore made a big spinnerbait the C.C. spinner [ Charlie Campbell ] that I used a lot simply because I was not very good at casting lighter lures . I caught a lot of bigger than average bass on it . Thats what this home-made spinnerbait is based off of .

I don't say this in an attempt to talk you out of adding deep cranking to your list, but just as a reminder.

It's a lot of work, your bait is only at its maximum depth for 1/3 or less of the distance you cast it, if you knew how many fish actually react to your bait, you'd crank until your arm fell off.  There are better and easier ways to fish deep, but IMO, none better at getting reaction from the fish. Get you some BenGay and a good supply of ibuprofen and go for it.

On *** Youtube , Gary klein has a good video on Deep Crankin using Dredger 25.5's .

Those Dredgers wont work you as hard as other big lipped lures ,they have a tight action . I use a Johnny Morris 5 to 1 gear ratio reel and it doesnt wear me out .

unless you troll it behind your boat

I think it definitely matters if the fish are at all fussy but as far as which color there is no way to know but to try. There’s also a factor in having confidence in what your using. I always had luck with fire tiger designs so I tend to use them more and have more confidence in them
