pauldconyers Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 For years I haven't really started fishing until April or May. This year I am going to try to hit the water earlier, like in March. From what I read with the colder water bass will be sluggish and that jerk baits are suggested and I'd like to grab 3 or 4. Not owning any I am looking for advice as to what to buy. Are the suspending variety the best to go with? Been looking at some of the rapalas and KVD Strike King variety but not sure what size or color to go with and need some advice. Quote
Rudy523 Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Google this: KVD's 6-season bass guide it give good suggestions on baits per water temp Quote
Super User JustJames Posted February 28, 2018 Super User Posted February 28, 2018 If you just start, I recommend Rapala Husky Jerk size 08 and 10. They are cheap and available anywhere with lots of color. 3 Quote

Made long casts and cranked it down then long pauses with short jerks in between. 2 Quote
Abby Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 I have a bunch of husky jerks, but just ordered some kvd jerk baits and a lucky craft one. Hope to see how they work soon... 1 Quote
The Bassman Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 I'm gradually building confidence with suspending jerk baits. One that has done well for me is a Tenn. Shad #8 Husky Jerk. I've had it for almost twenty five years and almost never fished it. After catching countless fish on floating Rapalas it dawned on me that this technique isn't too far removed. The bait is just more out of sight. Quote
MichaelJ7 Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 I am a big believer in early spring jerkbaiting. I have megabass, KVD’s, Rapalas, and Spro’s. Although I love the movement of the megabass (as I should at $25) my go to confidence jerkbait is the KVD’s. I carry two jerkbait rods, one for standard diving j300’s and the other for the deep divers. I fish very clear water here and clear ayu works great. But for clear or stained water my #1 choice is the basic chrome blue back. I also like the sexy shad, pro blue, mad dog shad, and gold/black back. But if I could only pick two it would be clear ayu and chrome blue back. You could fish anywhere in the country in any body of water with these two. Quote
ratherbfishin1 Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 I really like the smaller Yo-zuri Jerkbaits. They are pretty inexpensive and have great action and I like throwing them when the water is cold because they are small. Good Luck! Quote
