kevinv Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Joined this discussion on another forum, and being a few moths till fishing season, I figured it was time to re-look at my tackle boxes, and maybe do a spring cleanup. How do you set up you main tackle box? I do different fish at times on the same lake. this means that I sort some lures by fish type. Others I put blades together, spoons etc. do you setup by lure size, fish? type of tackle? Do use one box, or many? Thank you. Quote
Hawkeye21 Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 I mainly fish from a kayak so I have a milk crate behind my seat with 4 to 5 tackle containers in it. I have one large one for all my crankbaits. The rest are regular size, I think they're the 3600 size. I have one with my top water lures, one with swim jigs and chatterbaits and one with terminal tackle like hooks, jigs, sinker and other random stuff. I have one tall box for my spinners. All of my soft plastics go into zip lock bags. If I'm going on a boat I have a Rubbermade type tote with a lid on it that keeps all my gear. If I'm fishing a shoreline or going trout fishing I use a tackle bag with some boxes in it. Quote
Fish the Mitt Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Over the years, I have moved exclusively to Plano stow-away style boxes/sleeves. These stay on my bass boat during fishing season. I also have 2 dedicated to my kayak that have a variety of things I may need. I do have a large 6 tray Plano box that I used to use, but as stated, I've moved away from that. Now it's used for storing those things I have an abundance of that I don't necessarily need on the boat. As for method of organizing. I organize by lure type. Tray(s) of cranks, tray(s) of jerkbaits, tray(s) of jigs, etc.. etc.. Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted February 28, 2018 Super User Posted February 28, 2018 I have a large 6 tray tackle box with crankbaits, topwaters, and jerkbaits in it. I also have a small spinnerbait box that fits inside the tackle box. I use the soft tackle bags from BPS for soft plastics and jigs. Quote
bobbyg Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 I recently converted to a tackle bag with 5 of the 3600 size trays. I have them by bait type, one tray of lipless, one of crankbaits, one of topwater, one of spinners/buzzbaits, one of soft plastics and jigs. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 28, 2018 Super User Posted February 28, 2018 I use Hydrflo Stowaway boxes from Plano. They are organized by what combo I use to throw them. That way, I can pick and choose what rods and which boxes to bring. 1 Quote

Scarborough817 Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 don't really have a main tackle box i am a plano guy, i keep everything in planos except for my big swimbaits like huddlestons that kind of thing. once i started using planos i could not go back they are so much better than one big tackle box. but as far as organization goes i organize by type of bait, for example: all my frogs are in one box all of my squarebills are in another and so on and so on Quote

mattkenzer Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 I use the Plano 3601 Thin ProLatch Stowaway Box for 90% of my gear .... the larger lures - Deeper Diving Crankbaits, Spinnerbaits, Swimbaits etc. get larger boxes. 45 minutes ago, kevinv said: do you setup by lure size, fish? type of tackle? junyer357 Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Hard baits are in 3700 boxes by type, topwatwe, squarebill, spinnerbait, hooks weights, etc... Plastics are in ziploc bags by type, craws, worms, creatures, etc., with one bag of "goto" worms, holding my favorite and confidence plastics. They all stay in the boat, until i either go to a pond or with someone else, then i grab 5 boxes i think i need and my goto plastics bag. Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted February 28, 2018 Super User Posted February 28, 2018 I have a 21 foot tacklebox with a 250 Yamaha on the back. Ask me to go in someone else's boat and I get the cold sweats. 1 Quote

Super User TOXIC Posted February 28, 2018 Super User Posted February 28, 2018 When we go to Lake St Clair every year, it's my truck and my buddies boat. We leave my boat parked. I get one bin behind the driver seat on his boat (2016 Ranger 520) for my baits. I have used a soft sided bag that holds 5 or 6 plano boxes depending on which plano's I take. My SPRO Little John plano is one of deeper boxes and takes more room. I have smaller boxes for Dropshot and another small box for shakeyheads and I can usually get 3 or 4 other plano's in the compartment with my soft sided bag but not in the bag itself. I also have a huge Cabela's soft sided bag for all of my extra baits that I can rotate into my smaller bag if the smallies turn on to a specific bait. I also take around 8 combo's on the boat with 6 more as spares. 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted February 28, 2018 Super User Posted February 28, 2018 All of my tackle is in stowaway containers. I have several tackle boxes, both soft and hard sided. I pick the size box I want the night before a fishing trip. What I take from the stowaway container to fill it depends on what rods and reels, techniques and place (bank, kayak or boat) I intend to fish. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 28, 2018 Super User Posted February 28, 2018 Ontario, Canada!!!! Its cold in Ontario, Canada. Now to your question: First, you have to have a special place for your hockey pucks. They will bring you good luck, especially the Flyers' pucks. Second, you need a strap to carry your hockey stick in case a hockey game breaks out while you are fishing. Third, can you go to the Introductions area and introduce yourself so we will have a better idea of how to respond to your future queries. What about setting up your tackle box? Read the guys' posts and do what they say. All I can add is to be sure to bring a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the hooks. You will also need a 'cutter' for cutting your line, including one that cuts braid, when retying your baits and hooks. And a safe and dry place for your cell phone. Now go out there and take some bass out with a high check. If anyone mentions it just tell them what they say in Montreal: "I am sorry and I won't do it again." Seems to work for the Canadians in their games. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 28, 2018 Super User Posted February 28, 2018 I set tackle by lure types; top water, swimbaits, crankbaits in shallow, medium and deep divers, jigs by types, spinnerbaits, buzzers, spoons, several terminal tackle boxes and then we get into about 18 soft plastic boxes sorted by sizes and colors and jars of pork rind all bass. Other species have there boxes and salt water another complete set of tackle and storage systems. It gets complicated. Tom Quote

May work for the habs, but cant say much since my team is doing worse off then them right now. I have done a short introduction already. who told you about our hockey stick trick? 1 1 Quote

I do this to an extent, about half of my 3600 boxes are packed for a specfic combo to make trips more grab-n-go. The rest of my 3600 and and increasingly large number of 3500 boxes are packed with a specfic presentation in mind. So I can either grab a combo and it's box of "favorates" or I can grab a combo and a few boxes to cover the conditions I expect to face that day/place. 1 Quote

I have WAY more tackle than I can possibly ever need, and I'm always testing tackle from our sponsors. I basically have a dozen or so boxes I've put together as kits, with the current baits I want to try, or baits I like to fish. The rest are organized by type. Those are what I pick from. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 28, 2018 Super User Posted February 28, 2018 I will also admit a weakness for fussing over things like tackle sorting. On foot I only carry a single 3600 + a handfull of misc lures and on my yak I only take 4-6 boxes. While I love spending an evening sorting my gear for the next morning's trip, it is really nice to just be able to go "ok, grab the M/XF, the fluke box, the finesse jig box, handfull of poppers and jerks, and packing is done" when I want to make a more impromptu trip. LCG Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Bass pro backpack with two Plano 3601 boxes. One for plastics, one for lures. More than enough for a day out. Bag holds lunch and water in top cooler part. Line in one side pocket and pliers, terminal tackle in a double sided Plano box, scale, and scissors in the other side pocket. Tons of space and easy to travel with. Whole pack weighs 8.3 lbs fully loaded. Quote
