ThatDudeThere Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 I wanted to say hello, and thanks for the "what reel" threads. These really helped me choose my first reel. I used to fish abu ambassadeur reels, on the recommendation of my grandad. After my grandad died, I eventually got frustrated with backlashing and hanging up, along with just not getting enough fish to be worth it. That was years ago, and I quit fishing. So now I want to do it right. I want a reel that is the most backlash proof, and also one I can bomb out there. Well this is my first pick: Shimano Metanium HG 13 7.4:1 https://www.ebay.com/itm/152923356591 Keep in mind I am the typical tightwad, but I don't want to have any more excuses. I'm eyeing the Tatula SV next for the backlash issues. This will go along with 2 Abu Blue Max rod/reel 6.5 ft MH combos and a $50 ugly stick GX2 50 Spinning rod/reel combo...oh and a cheap shakespeare ultralight spinning rig. I traded for the 2 blue max's and haven't fished those. The large spinning rig I bought to catfish, but only used it a couple times. 2 Quote

Pro Logcatcher Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Welcome to Bassresource! I'm sorry to say it, but the only solution to stopping backlashes is practice. I learned how to use a baitcaster by casting in the backyard with a weight and heavy braid (it backlashes less). I slowly brought down the weight and lb test until now I can skip weightless plastics on 10lb test mono. Keep working at it and you'll get it! Quote
Super User burrows Posted February 27, 2018 Super User Posted February 27, 2018 A good reel helps a lot! Backlashes are going to happen but they happen less on a good reel. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 27, 2018 Super User Posted February 27, 2018 Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~ "Backlash proof" might be expecting too much. While better quality equipment is routinely more consistent, your casting success will be far more depended on your ability to both tune & effectively cast your reels. Revolving spool gear can be a little tricky at first but like most everything - it's all about learning how to do it right & then putting the time in to practice. Spending $$ is not a short cut to that. Good Luck A-Jay 3 Quote
Super User senile1 Posted February 27, 2018 Super User Posted February 27, 2018 Welcome to Bass Resource and nice first post! It's good to hear where you are at so members can pitch in with suggestions. It does take practice to be good with a bait caster but any reel in the 70 - 100 dollar range from a known brand should cast well, in my experience. It sounds like you picked a high quality reel so get out in the yard and start practicing and the backlashes will ultimately be minimized. You might also check this video out on how to setup your baitcaster as it will help to minimize backlashes as well. https://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/cast-adjust-baitcast.html 1 Quote

Fishingmickey Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Best thing I can recommend is do not overfill the reel spool, Don't swing for the fences (by trying to make excessively long casts). Learn to feel the reel spool with your thumb. Chunking a large spinner bait or light crank bait into the wind is a recipe for disaster. Fishingmickey Quote

Yes I am trying to decide what rod to choose. Thanks everyone! I was decent at casting. I think my problem was trying to cast to hard. I do realize that a $99 reel would have been great, but after reading a ton...I decided to skip the middle level and go all out. I'm also trying to learn what type rods I need for the types of fishing I want to do beyond my "medium" generic setups. Also I'm thinking about adding to my dusty bait arsenal. I'm going through bass pro looking at reviews, and saving some picks I wouldn't have thought of. I'll do some searching here on that also. Thanks for all the good advise. I'll update with my rod choice and second setup if anyone is interested. 2 Quote
Florida Cracker2 Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 It's good to go with a nice baitcaster reel. As for rods, I have cheap fiberglass noodles to high quality graphite and they all have their uses. I also have spinning reels from the 'coffee grinder' to the ultra smooth, but baitcasters you don't wan't to skimp on. 1 Quote
ratherbfishin1 Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 For rods i would say a M or MH fast for soft plastics if you plan on throwing a lot of them. 6'6" to 7' is what i would recommend. This setup will allow you to fish a lot of stuff from pretty much any soft plastic to frogs and jigs(especially with a MH but depending on the manufacturer you can often throw a frog on a M if you wanted). And i would try to find the rod you are interested in at a store so you can pair it with your reel and make sure it ballences right and is comfortable. Good Luck! Quote

And while you are at it you can order some LSU stuff, too, and wear it while fishing. Be sure to yell "Geaux Tigers" when you set the hook. Great having you with us. And you can't go wrong with Shimano. Quote

ratherbfishin1 Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Just now, ThatDudeThere said: Yes I want a 7'6" MH/moderate rod to be able to cast as far as possible, and maybe a 7' rod for mabe the tatula sv. Good idea to bring the reel to the store. Yeah, it's really just personal preference as far as rod lengths go. Normally when fishing frogs, jigs, and plastics you want the faster action for hooksets and to get them out of cover. Just to keep that in mind when picking out rods. Oh and by the way welcome to BR! ThatDudeThere Posted February 28, 2018 Author Posted February 28, 2018 Thanks everyone for the welcomes! So the 7'6" rod that I'm wanting is for crankbaits, and anything else I can get away with doing. I'm realizing that my 7.4:1 Metanium is not the best ratio for mid to deep cranking. I'll find a use for it somewhere else like topwater ect. I found a rod for cranking, thanks to this forum! It's the Powell Inferno Crankbait rod, and has a 10 lb line minimum. Can anyone recommend a reel that is good for mid-deep cranking? Quote
ThatDudeThere Posted February 28, 2018 Author Posted February 28, 2018 So I have been reading a ton. I just pulled the trigger on a Tatula SV 6.3:1! Can someone help me decide for a crankbait setup? Tatula SV and a glass rod; IRG763CC-MH iRod Genesis II Casting Freds Crank Launch Jr. with 8lb min line capacity. Or the 13 metanium with a more affordable glass Powell Inferno: http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Powell_Inferno_Crankbait_and_Jerkbait_Casting_Rods/descpage-PCI.html Both reels max drag work out and fit those rods I matched them with. If one reel is better over the other for a certain thing, I could use either one for cranking duty. I'll try to make it until tomorrow and hold back this itch to buy! Quote
