freelancer27 Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Hi all, I am looking for a dedicated reel for this technique. Requirements: * Fast Gear ratio * good torque * longer handle * sub 7 oz * price below 400 USD What would you recommend? Thanks. Cheers! Quote

You won’t get much torque from a high gear ratio and a longer handle won’t help. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted February 26, 2018 Super User Posted February 26, 2018 Honestly I fish a bunch of the Daiwa Tatula line of reels. My personal frog reel is a Tatula 100 Type R 8-1. It has 65 pound Power Pro Spectra and it works great. Some prefer the smaller reel and if that is you, then go with a Tatula CT or CT Type R in a 8-1. There are plenty of more expensive reels to choose from, but the Tatula, Tatula Type Rs and the Tatula CTs work for me. By the way a tatula CT type R is 7.2 oz. and a regular CT is 7.4. If you were blind folded and I put each one in your hand I doubt you could tell me which one weighed .2 more. So forget about the weight being sub 7 oz it is really irrelevant. By the way most people suggest a fast reel ratio, for flipping and frogging, not for brute power but rather for fast retrieves. When a fish blows up on the bait you can quickly retrieve the lure and refire another cast back to the area in hopes of the fish reacting to it again. Quote

Super User NHBull Posted February 26, 2018 Super User Posted February 26, 2018 I would look for a used MET MGL Or wait for the Bantam 1 Quote
CroakHunter Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 I feel like the reel is the least important aspect of frogging. Something with a 7+ gear ratio would do fine. I personally use a curado 200ihg Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted February 26, 2018 Super User Posted February 26, 2018 I would recommend you put your requirements in the sub 8oz range for more/better frog reel options. OG zillion HLC J Dream 7.9 OG zillion /w machined spacers and drop in a TDZ R+ spool. SV103 /w an R+ spool All of those are fantastic frog reels. 1 Quote

I was thinking that too, the reel doesn’t matter much and I’d focus more on the rod. I know I saw someone with a Curado K frog reel, large spool, lots of capacity, mine holds 80 yards of 65 lb braid. Maico1 Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Calais DC7 or a 16 Antares DC HG.....yeah I know the 16 is about 150 over your budget but if you want to get serious about it save a little more. Quote
Finnz922 Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Tat CT or Fuego CT in 7.3 or 8.1. A little heavier, but solid reels nonetheless. Quote
freelancer27 Posted February 27, 2018 Author Posted February 27, 2018 Thanks guys. I do own a SV103 XS (that is on a Jig rod atm). The reason why I am leaning towards a lighter reel is the fatigue. Walking the dog can be pretty exhausting if done over a long period of time. So a light combo of rod and reel should be beneficial. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted February 27, 2018 Super User Posted February 27, 2018 light, fast, good drag. I use a Lew's LFS Tournament MB in 7.5:1. But they make one faster. Quote
LionHeart Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Tournament MB is a solid reel in 7 or 8 speed. You can also catch a Super Duty on sale for $99 quite often. Don't remember the weight but I'd stay away from the 8 speed Super Duty. Quote
RichF Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Curado K fits the bill. I don't see a reason to get an uber expensive reel for frogging. I used a Curado E7 then switched to a Daiwa Zillion TWS. Both worked awesome. Just got a K and was bombing a spro jr around Lake Fork a week ago. Quote
freelancer27 Posted February 28, 2018 Author Posted February 28, 2018 Thanks guys. I think I will use my Daiwa Coastal for now. It is heavy but it is the cheapest option Quote
