Land Surveyor13 Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Got the boat in the picture to the left and every time I open the starboard rod locker I get the smell of gas fumes. I've searched all of the fittings that I can get to easily and can't find any leaks in the fuel system. I've also tried to get down to the gas tank itself but that is next to impossible to do. I've searched the internet and can't find anything on it either. Is this just something to expect will happen or do I need to get it checked out? Thanks in advance for your response. Jerrod Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted August 15, 2007 Super User Posted August 15, 2007 My boat is that way also in the port rod locker when I fill the boat up. I have learned to only keep about 40 gallons in that doesn't happen. Like you I can't get to everything for a good look. Quote
Land Surveyor13 Posted August 15, 2007 Author Posted August 15, 2007 Jig Man, Why 40 gallons? Does it keep it from sloshing around so much and creating additional fumes in the tank? Thanks, Jerrod Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted August 15, 2007 Super User Posted August 15, 2007 What ever my problem is some where around the 40 gallon mark makes it better. I have a 55 gallon tank so my problem must either be close to the top of the tank or have something to do with expansion of the gasoline in the tank. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted August 15, 2007 Super User Posted August 15, 2007 When I attended the BR get together at Lake Fork last March, I went out with Muddy one afternoon in the rental boat. The gas fumes were awful! As soon as we got back to the dock, Muddy got off the boat and the horrible gas fumes went away. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted August 15, 2007 Super User Posted August 15, 2007 There have been a number of reports about gas fumes coming from the rod lockers when the boat has been stored. Multiple brands of boats so it's not just one brand. It appears the problem may be the plastic tanks used and gas fumes permeating it and filling any forward hold area with the odor. The most common fix is to just leave the rod lockers open when the boat is in storage. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted August 16, 2007 Super User Posted August 16, 2007 I have the same problem with my boat.. I was going to take it back to Bass Pro where I bought it but it seems to be a normal thing. Quote
George Welcome Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 If you are smelling gas fumes you have a problem. Quote
snapperd1 Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Thanks George gas fumes are a real problem. Most of all they can and will explode. If you are smelling gas where it should not be go and have it checked out. If you smelled gas in the trunk of your car you would have it checked out. GAS FUMES ARE NOT TO BE PLAYED WITH YOU COULD GO BOOM ON THE LAKE. Please have this checked and be safe out there. TD Quote
