Falkus Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 Just have some chatterbait blades that I got from Barlow's Tackle. I was trying to bend it with the nose pliers but it's not turning out good. I was wondering if I should get two swivel pad locking pliers or 2-1/2 In. Table Swivel Vise. Just lock that up and bend it properly ? What do you guys use or recommendations that I should do that doesn't cost me a fortune ? Quote
Falkus Posted February 25, 2018 Author Posted February 25, 2018 I have several of those: want to make the blade curved - like this Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 25, 2018 Global Moderator Posted February 25, 2018 I use 2 pairs of bullnose pliers from Harbor Freight. Can bend up to 3 at a time like that. Quote
cadman Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 Burke, I am a sheet metal designer and I bend my blades in a small box brake. However I would try these. Get two pairs. Scribe a light line with a fine tip marker on your blade. Put masking tape on the inside of both jaws of both sets, or you can put tape on both sides of the blade and then scribe your line over the tape. Put one set of pliers with the jaws on the line, then take the other set and put it up against it. Now grab your pliers and bend the blade. Very simple. I got the vice grip pliers at Menards For accuracy, you will need a protractor to get the correct angle. It's pretty simple. If you need more help PM me and I will help you out. 1 Quote

I didn't notice this comment. The pliers I listed above are about $25 each. If you want to, send me the blades and I will bend them for you and then send them back to you. Just pay for return postage. I will need one sent to me bent so I can measure the distance and the angle. PM me 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 25, 2018 Super User Posted February 25, 2018 I have read a lot of topics about bending the blades so I have to ask. What does it do? Are my baits less effective because I don't bend the blade? I get a hard vibrating bait while also being very erratic, I just want to know what bending the blade actually does and if it really makes a difference. Quote

It changes the vibration, the running depth, and the action of the bait. The sharper the bend the shallower the bait will tend to run. The further back the bend, the slower the vibration. If the bend isn't straight it will make the bait want to kick out or "hunt", so an angled bend isn't a bad thing. Bending the blade seems to give them a more consistent vibration while the flat blade does a lot more hunting and darting. The bent blade gives more thump and gets the bigger bites for me. Quote
Dave A Posted March 7, 2018 Posted March 7, 2018 I bend mine in a bench vice by clamping it at the spot where I want the bend, then I lean a lever on top of the blade and press it forward and down just enough to get a small bend. I like to place the bend low, right between the holes for the snap. It provides the lateral pop that I like when I snap the rod tip. Quote

Clamp it in a vise with some hard wood scraps and hit it with a mallet or hammer. You can make a dedicated break jig with a hinge, but that would only be worth the trouble if you are trying to bend a bunch. We're always having to mod and fabricate small parts for bikes. My favorite tool is the angle grinder, love the pyrotechnics.. Quote
INEEDANEWSCREENNAME030718 Posted March 7, 2018 Posted March 7, 2018 I use my map torch and when they're warm I use regular pliers. They bend easier and smoother when warmed. Quote
