LAURASDAD Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Hello, Taking my family boating over the weekend. I have a 50HP Evinrude with a power trim. Can I use the power trim to "help" my wife get out of the water into the boat? She weights approx 170lbs. I was hoping she could put her feet on the lower unit; and I could raise the trim to help her get out of the water. thanks Larry Quote
Cajun1977 Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 yes its actually a recommended technique if someone has fallen overboard Quote
Super User cart7t Posted August 10, 2007 Super User Posted August 10, 2007 Why not get one of those hang-over-the-side ladders? Not saying the engine wouldn't handle the job but if she's barefoot and her foot would slip off the cavitation plate, she could wind up with a nasty gash if her foot strikes the prop. Quote
Land Surveyor13 Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Should have bought a Triton. Ladder built into the hull. Just kidding. I have seen many professionals do this on T.V. Jerrod P.S. : sometimes I amaze myself when I read what I wrote. If anyone noticed I typed Latter instead of Ladder. Quote
surfer Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Being that the hydraulics can hold under hole shot conditions her 170 shouldn't be a problem, but is she nimble enough to stay on it as the capitation plate tilts upward. And where will she step to after that. If she slips there are many different injuries that may happen. A ladder would be much safer. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0025428010933a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&QueryText=boat+ladder&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=boat+ladder&noImage=0 I recommend the 4 rung version. josh Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I put a peice of non slip material (kind of like sandpaper) on my cavitation plate just for that reason - in case someone falls overboard. I've used it to hoist myself back on and i'm 235 lbs. Quote
HPBB Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 That is how we used to get in My boat when we would water ski or tube. I have hydros on the motor so it made it easy to step there Quote
Super User cart7t Posted August 11, 2007 Super User Posted August 11, 2007 After seeing this thread title a few times I've got to laugh. My wife would kill me if I posted a question on a public forum about hoisting her with a OB motor power trim along with mentioning her weight! ;D Quote

Super User Bassn Blvd Posted August 12, 2007 Super User Posted August 12, 2007 Maybe she should stick to pools and not the middle of lakes... Quote

Guns_Donavan Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 The 1st thing that came to mind was a cargo boom with a hydraulic wench. Sorry man. Quote
LAURASDAD Posted August 13, 2007 Author Posted August 13, 2007 Well, we made it back from the lake. My wife stepped onto the lower unit of the motor and ripped the transom completely off the boat. Just kidding. She actually chickened out all together so it was a non issue. My daughter had no problem climbing in the boat. You guys must have quite an image of my wife in your minds. I guess when one uses "hoist" and "wife" in the same sentence, it does create a certain image. thanks Larry Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted August 13, 2007 Super User Posted August 13, 2007 OH Man. I would be on the couch again. Quote
