Lead Head Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Im getting ready to buy a new soft plastics rod and have narrowed my search down to these two. I plan to run 30lb braid and throw 1/4 - 3/8oz (occasionally 1/2) weights. Very little open water, mostly moderate cover. I operate on a pretty limited budget and have no experience with rods in the 100$+ price range. I can get either rod right now for about the same price but after changing my mind on which one to get about 10 times in the last 3 days I need some help. Looking at MH/F action rods. As I said, i have no real experience with rods in general beyond some cheaper BPS stuff so any info or advice (especially relative to how these rods compare to one another) will be greatly appreciated. ratherbfishin1 Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 i Have a jm sig series for plastics and absolutely love it. The other one i really like is their carbonlite because of the winn grips. If you like winn grips than that might be a good choice. The only thing i've found to be better about the JM sig series is it supposedly has better graphite but i don't really notice a difference in sensitivity (they are both great). I know you won't be disappointed with either of these rods but i've never fished a fury. Quote
Lead Head Posted February 22, 2018 Author Posted February 22, 2018 One of the reasons I never could pull the trigger on a carbonlite is the grips. I very much so prefer cork. I'm also one of the few that really like the power hump. Would you say the tip is the same on the carbonlite and JM? Thanks for the feedback! Quote
kingmotorboat Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Never fished the signature series but owned a few fury's, if you get a fury go with the 4 power. I absolutely loved my fury's before I moved up in the Dobyns lineup. I find Dobyns rods to be the most comfortable rod in my hands. Try and get your hands on both and you decide Quote

I Have a medium heavy fast carbonlite and it's got a really nice light tip. I also have the medium xf JM and I feel like the tip is actually a little bit stiffer but i can't really tell you how similar the tips are because they are both different powers and actions. Both rods are great for a plastics rod IMO. Good Luck! Quote
Lead Head Posted February 22, 2018 Author Posted February 22, 2018 Thanks for the reply! I have held both rods... whipped them around the store like a drunk Jedi... and still ride the fence. They both have pros and cons for me personally and with my limited rod experience I'm just looking for some "on the water" experience from you guys. I'll have to jump off the fence one way or the other before BPS sale ends 1 Quote
ratherbfishin1 Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 i'll be honest i don't think you can go wrong with any of the rods listed. I have never tried a fury but have heard good things and i absolutely love my bps rods so i think if i were you i would choose the handel that feels better to you and price which one you can get cheaper. Considering if you buy a carbonlite now you get the reel for free than that might not be a bad option. I love both of my bps rods and if someone asks which one i like more i'm gonna have a really hard time telling them so if it were me i would get the carbonlite and you get a reel with it too. 120 for the combo is a steal imo. Good Luck! Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 22, 2018 Super User Posted February 22, 2018 You can upgrade your Dobyns rods, you are stuck with BPS-JM rods. Tom Quote

Tom This may sound dumb but what do you mean you can upgrade dobyns? Do they have an exchange thing or do you just mean sell your lower model and buy a nicer one? Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 22, 2018 Super User Posted February 22, 2018 Go on the Dobyns site and read what they offer. Tom 1 Quote
Lead Head Posted February 23, 2018 Author Posted February 23, 2018 Thanks for the tip on the Dobyns upgrade policy. I read up on it and it seems like a really nice feature. Quote
redbirdsfan44 Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 IMO Johnny likes to put a lot of flashy paint on his rods for appearance. Again just my opinion but i think dobyns is putting out the best $100-110 rod on the market 1 Quote
Lead Head Posted February 23, 2018 Author Posted February 23, 2018 Fair enough. I was sold on the Fury until I realized I could get the JM for 100$ during the BPS sale. It had me wondering if the JM was actually a better rod since it's normal price is 150$. I just don't know enough about the finer points of rods to look at materials and see a difference, so I automatically default back to price. I'm sure BPS is still making a profit selling the JM at 100$ and I realize price doesn't always mean quality... that's why I started asking you guys. Now that I think about it, maybe I asked the wrong question. For you guys with a better understanding of rods and rod components, do one of the rods stand out on a "quality of components"? I understand there are many other variables, just trying to do as much homework as possible. When I started trying to look this stuff up myself it got over my head really quick. Quote
PatrickKnight Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 The Fury rod uses Toray carbon. The BPS rods use RX6t4350934590 graphite (hopefully my sarcasm is felt here). The old Carbonlites were a great rod at the 100 dollar price point until the Fury came out. IMO nothing really even comes close to the Fury at the 100 dollar price point. Quote
