I am looking to upgrade some of my cheaper rods I got when I was first starting to fish tournaments 4 years ago. As you can imagine they have seen their better days especially the lower end ones. I am on a budget as a high school student so I am trying to stay kinda cheap. My higher end rods are fairly new so I am just looking for some in the $100-$150 range. I currently use Abu Garcia Veritas for the majority of my rods but have been looking at the St. Croix Bass X Series. I have a Legend Tournament spinning rod that I love and I have heard great things from the Bass X rods. So, what rods would you recommend? I am looking to get about 4 casting and 2 spinning. I am also open to other rods as well, these 2 just happened to catch my eye. Thanks for your recommendations!

I've heard great things about the bass x as well seemed a little tip heavy from what I've felt but I don't know once you strap a reel down. I'm a Dobyns guy personally and love the fury and the savvy which you can get for 100 on their page

The bass x rods utilize St. Croixs lowest end graphite and to me the rods are less than stellar. For another $30 you can get a much better blank if you were to go with the mojo bass line. If you don't want to to go over the price of $100 I would look at a different brand than croix and I am a big croix guy.

I am an Abu guy. Had a St. Croox Mojo and sold it. I prefer rods on the stiffer side and Abu is spot on for me. I would go Veritas. I have a ton of them. Or if you want to get a little more technique specific go with the Ike signature series rods. They range from $129-$149. I recently just added 4 rods to my lineup and they were all Ike signature. Either one would work though. Good luck

Is there a retailer near you that you can handle both?  If there is, bring your reel and ask if you can mount it on each rod.  Specifications aside, how the rod 'feels' in your hand is 90% of it.

Best of luck picking out a rod.

Mojo bass is better than the bass X. Daiwa tatula is a fine rod that can be found for around 100 if you shop around.

I was thinking about the mojo bass too. I definitely don’t mind paying $100+ for a quality rod within my price range.

Yeah, I like the veritas rods. Nothing wrong with mine. Just looking at my options!

Good idea. I haven’t seen the Bass X at Cabelas and I currently have 4 or 5 Veritas rods so I know how they feel. Just looking at my options!

You could get avids* for spinning and Mojo for casting

My favorite rod is a daiwa fuego $70. Followed by my falcon Bucoo sr $100. And then my lews tp-1 speed stick $100.

Have handle the veritas, and while they are nice I don't feel like they beat any of the rods I listed for the price. Especially the fuego

I have a 7'4" mh/MF Bass X, and use it for spinner baits and chatter baits but it can do a lot of things well.  May not be the best rod on paper but it is one of my favorite rods.  So fun to use.

I also have a Diawa Tatula in 7'2" heavy/fast and medheavy/ regular(basically fast action). Also great rods.  You can get them from a few places on line for $110 shipped.  Great rods as well.  Seem to be excellent quality rods, especially at $110.
