Having fished in salt water nearly all my life no reel is salt water proof and needs to be cleaned. The difference from fresh water being corrosion and salt deposited on parts after the water evaporates. Shimano's Calcutta's for example are designed to seal water intrusion and uses metals that are not galvanic or prone to corrode. Off shore reels like Penn Int'l require rinsing and cleaning after use in salt water.
