This has probably been mentioned in here before but who else uses tiny zip-ties to secure the skirts on their jigs and spinnerbaits? I started doing it years ago on cheaper brands because I got tired of the skirts sliding back on every hookset. Now I keep a pack of zip ties in my boxes that have jigs or spinnerbaits and as soon as I open a new one I put one on it. It’s just a precaution and keeps me from cussing like a sailor.

Zip ties for years ?

I do not use normal zip ties, the ones I use have a horizontal tag end that lays flat against the tie.

I tie and glue ever skirted bait I get. I don't change skirts, I just buy the same bait in whatever color I want but have yet to have a skirt come off. Not a single one.

Perhaps a higher quality jig manufacturer is needed? I know for me, and the jig company I primarily use, this is definitely not an issue.

Spinnerbaits on the other hand, I use a wide variety. So from time to time, I do see this. Do I find a workaround? No, I find a new spinnerbait. A skirted lure manufacturer, in my opinion, should have emphasis placed on their skirt and their method of keeping it in place.

If I have to zip tie the skirt in place, I won't use that product. That's like buying a suspending jerkbait that doesn't suspend (adding suspend dots to a suspending bait) or buying a lure with dull hooks.

Again, personal opinion.

I know what you’re saying. I buy better quality lures now. When I started using the zip ties, I was still in school and working a few evenings a week after football practice. I had to buy the ole Walmart $1 specials, money was tight paying for vehicle insurance. Haha.  I guess I did it for so long that it’s just habit now.  All the jigs I have now have good skirts on them but I still put the zip ties on. Lol

Understood, and I get where you're coming from. We've all been there. I suspected, as you also stated, that it was more of a precaution now.

What gauge/type wire is best for tying on skirts?

22 gauge works the best for me. It is thin enough to bend where needed but doesn't break or cut the skirt strands easily.

Just because a jig skirt aint hand tied don't mean it aint a quality jig!

Head design, weed guard, & hook is far more important that a piece of wire.

By the time y'all get your wire out, pliers out, & cut the wire, I'm done & moved on!

I don't know HOW many skirts I've lost over the years because their "rubber band" got all soft and useless.  I use tiny zip ties all the time now.
