Like the title states, my family and I are relocating to the Durham/Raleigh area, and I was wondering what the Bass fishing was like there and surrounding areas?  I have a 17ft aluminum bass boat, and also like to shore fish ponds and rivers/creeks if I don't have the time to get out the boat.

Thanks for any help/advice you have ;)

I have only been to falls lake. I like it. Catch a bunch of 3-5 pounders every time I go (3 trips so far). Otherwise, I don't fish much around there. I am in Winston and fish Norman, Kerr Scott Reservoir, Salem, Belews, and High Rock.

You've got Jordan and Sharon Harris immediately available, and the coast to the east or mountain smallie said to the west. Don't sleep on the Yadkin chain either...you're gonna be ok!

great fishing in NC. you will have plenty of big lakes to choose from being in such a central area. and most people are nice enough to let you fish their private ponds as well

That sounds great, thanks guys.  The LMB situation here in PA is not great, so it's good to hear it is better there.

I lived in Charlotte for a few years and but left in 2015.

The best two lakes for me were Lake Badin and Tuckertown. Mostly because they were the only lakes near me that I could find consistent grass for frogs, flipping, punching, etc.

I caught a few 20+ pound bags at these places.

Falls Lake and Shearon Harris Reservoir are excellent. Jordan Lake is hit or miss and you are still very close to Kerr, Hyco, Mayo, and Lake Gaston.  You are in a good fishing area where you can fish 12 months a year

Hi,

Terry here in Oxford NC, some 50 miles north of Raleigh.  Yes, lots of places to fish down here.  Like someone already mentioned Falls lake in the Durham area, Jorden lake near Raleigh.  Many more.  Go north on 85 and there is Kerr lake/Buggs/Island.  Inbetween Kerr lake and Durham just off I85 there are some small lakes (no gas engine) that can be fished in Oxford (lake Devlin) but a city permit is required and there is a small lake of the same sort (no gas engine) in Creedmoor NC but one can also fish off the bank at either.  No city permit required at lake Creedmoor.

Buggs Island and Lake Gaston (downstream from Buggs Island/Kerr hold some stripers and some nice Crappie.

If you like fishing for smallies, Walleye, or stripers drive up into Virginia to the Staunton/Roanoke River and a little farther north in VA you can go to the NEW river (oddly it's the oldest river in the world).  It has some state record small mouth, Walleye and even Muskie not to mention a number of other fish.  Don't forget the coast.  Lots of good salt water fishing in the bays and inland waterways too.  Good luck.  PS, if you plan to fish up my way let me know and I'll give you some tips on where to go or even fish with you as I'm retired so got lots of time to fish (when the wife don't have something planned for me anyway).

Sounds like I'll have better fishing than I do now, thanks guys.  I'm getting excited!  Year round fishing is possible here in PA, but it's not all that enjoyable in the winter ice, for me anyway.

T-minus 3 days until I'm a North Carolinian, Carolinan.....

Starting to get excited about the fishing prospects.  I am going to be 40 minutes from Shearon Harris, and Falls Lake, and 20 from Lake Jordan.

Kind of like us here in SC. I'd rather be called a (Univ of SC) Gamecock than a stinking (Clemson) Tiger.

I hear ya Koz.  I don't mind Clemson when they loose at football, problem is they don't often loose! One reason I like N Carolina is cause they have lots of good basket ball teams, Duke, State, NC State and their football teams keep getting better too.  I have no prejudice against any of them but in a given year I might like one slightly more than the other but I root for them all.  Often, one or the other will take it all at something.

I've heard they have some Walleye.  Guess I need to get over there and seek them out.  They are my favorite eating fish Next to Yellow Perch.  When I lived in Ohio I used to go up to Lake Erie sometimes just to catch the perch.
