Bassin_Harrison Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 HI I am new to fishing fluorocarbon and just got my first spool of it. I've had heard that is expected to get backlashes with a brand new spool of fluorocarbon. But that isn't my problem. My fluoro is extremely curly, I have have used braid and mono and have never seen line this curly. I got tactical fluro by p-line which I have heard is decent for the price. So my question is: Is fluoro usually extremely curly brand new or did I maybe get a spool that has been sitting on the shelf for too long? Thanks, Harrison Quote

I always spray KVD line conditioner on the line when I first spool it. this takes away a lot of the memory. if you use the conditioner it works better if you spray it the night before instead of right before you use it. 1 Quote
SWVABass Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 I use line conditioner as well. I like to spray mine on a cloth, and run my line through it as I spool it. Keeps my reels much cleaner that way. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted February 19, 2018 Super User Posted February 19, 2018 Step one turn up your breaking and spool tension. Step two learn to cast all over again. It is a different game managing fluorocarbon. Take it easy and learn how the line needs to be managed. If you are used to braid, it's going to be more painful mistakes. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 19, 2018 Super User Posted February 19, 2018 What lb test did you purchase and what type of reel do you use, spinning or casting? Tom 2 Quote

Tom Thanks for all the tips everybody, I'll have to look into some line conditioner. Didn't even know that was a thing matter of fact. And i am using a casting reel. I think its 14 or 15 lb test Quote

Take a look at the P-Line FC diameter for the line you have, it's on the label or listed by TW. Compare the P-Line to a popular selling FC like Sunline Sniper, every .001 increase is equal to about 2 lb test strength and increased memory. Line conditioners are also not equal, use KVD as it's also the best seller. Tom Quote

I'm going to have to invest in some sniper and see if I can feel the difference. And I was looking at the KVD conditioner earlier. I'll have to buy both and see what its like. Quote

Assassin is good for the price as well. Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 I pretty much use braid exclusively. Sometimes with a flouro leader. Recently I got 12# Invisx for my jerk bait casting rod. I still hate the stretch of flouro but this stuff has hardly any memory. Much better than other stuff I tried in the past. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted February 19, 2018 Global Moderator Posted February 19, 2018 As stated all Flouro is not created equal. In regards to fishing, Its the very definition of you getting what you pay for. I use 100% Flouro (Sniper or Shooter) on every combo I own except 2. Yes, a quality line is more expensive and there is a learning curve and useing a conditioner helps. However, Once you master the nuances of it you'll understand why it's as popular as it is. LonnieP Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Have you tried casting with that line yet? I use 12 lb P-line tactical on most of my reels and I get fewer backlashes than any other fluorocarbon I've tried and I don't use line conditioner. Quote
bagofdonuts Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Try sniper, there's a big difference. it handles almost as easy as mono, especially in the 12lb and 14lb range. also, spool half your spool with mono then add the floro on top. will save you some money and handle better. 2 Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 I heard some "pre stretch" the line to help it coil less. Is this true or would it weaken the line? Quote

And yes it would weaken if stretched. Just use quality line, spool in the correct direction (off the top) periodically spray with a line conditioner during spooling and the night before an outing If left sitting for any length of time and you're good. Mike Thanks for the input mike, yeah I'm going to pick up some Sniper and try it out. I fish on a budget and spending 20-25 bucks on line is a bit scary but hopefully its worth it. 11 hours ago, bagofdonuts said: Try sniper, there's a big difference. it handles almost as easy as mono, especially in the 12lb and 14lb range. also, spool half your spool with mono then add the floro on top. will save you some money and handle better. Its just that it is crazy curly and curls back on itself sometimes. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 20, 2018 Super User Posted February 20, 2018 How cold is it where you are fishing? Sunline 14 lb Sniper is $20 spool, Shooter is more expensive and has more memory then Sniper. Tom Quote
Ads7633 Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Get yourself some Sniper. But I would recommend only spooling about 50-60 yds on at a time. Just put a braid or mono backing on underneath. This will help make that $25 last a lot longer, and this way if/when you have a bad backlash you don’t lose the whole spool. 1 Quote

P-line tactical is the best handling fluorocarbon I've used and I've tried a lot of them. A close second would be Sunline Assassin. 1 Quote
