I was wondering which KVD square bill crankbait colour works best other than the shad colours. I live in Canada, and there are no shad, so I dont know which colours would work good up here. Im thinking about purchasing the river minnow colour, river shiner colour or any of the natural colours(river bream, pumpkinseed). Any suggestions help, thanks.

besides sexy shad, I use one of the crawdad colors, bluegill, or chart/perch

Chart. Black back should work everywhere. Besides that look into the bluegill colored baits and see if they match your local forage.

Sexy shad is my favorite, closely followed by Tennessee shad, with gizzard shad taking third.  I fish a lot of ponds that have don't have any shad in them, but the fish must not know or don't care.  If you're really against using anything with shad in the name, chartreuse/black back, bluegill, and db chili craw have all caught me fish.

I wouldn't stress too much about specific colors, but generally if you're in the north and your water is pretty clear, any of the natural colors are a fine place to start. You want some northern baitfish (Perch or any of the "Breams"), and you want some craw colors. Really, anything will do, however.

Thanks. I might give the shad colours a second thought.

When I am on lakes going after largemouth, it varies depending on visibility. Usually shad or green/white. For smallies on the rivers, blk/chart almost always. In my experience smallmouth like the bright obnoxious colored cranks regardless of the conditions.

I am in Northern Minnesota and these are the 2 colors I throw. download-1.jpg.13d6a49e285b9750d0e6573b7c55e8e6.jpgdownload.jpg.6fa490826361839d88482719be068cdf.jpg

Granted, I do fish a shad lake, but I have used Chartreuse Shad in many lakes with no shad at all and knocked them out.  There is almost a purple/blue iridescent color to it that none of the others have and it seems to make a difference.

I accidentally discovered this as I bought a crankbait for my wife for no reason other than it was purple iridescent.  I got her a pink colored crank as well.  After weeks and weeks of her CONSISTENTLY out fishing me with that one stupid purple lure (she calls it her lucky lure now, and I have gone swimming for it before for the sake of my marriage) I began to search for a similar color, and the chartreuse shad in the KVD lineup is the closest.  Now I have 5 of my own "lucky lures".

Bluegill have purple on them many times of the year and any time you can get some purple on a lure it is a good thing in the lakes I fish.

I’m in central Ontario and pretty much all the different colours work fine. The shad coloured ones are very similar to any natural lake shiners we have here and if there’s any smelt in the lake your fishing, they’re a pretty close match to them as well.
