Best time for topwater lures.

I fish mainly at night (no jetskis and/or pleasure boaters to put up with) from around 10pm until usually about 7am. Now before I finish up, I'll always throw some topwater lures as the rest of you probably would. My question is, during the night have any of you thrown topwater lures? Or is it a waste of time because topwater lures mainly are for dusk/dawn & cloudy days. Just something I've been thinking about while I'm out at night. I'll be interested in what you all think.

yeah i read an article called "give night bass the jitters" all about jitterbug fishin at night. def. one of the best times to fish a topwater.

I'm with you I can not catch bass at night on topwater either. I stick to black spinnerbaits

Throw a black buzzbait at night.  Sometimes I will throw 40 or 50 times on one point if I know there are fish on it.  I caught my longest Bass at nitght on a black buzzbait.   27 inches.  Only weighted 6lb 14oz but was in a very infertile mountian lake in Kentucky.

Also have caught several Smallies doing this.

Night fishing and topwaters are like hot dogs and mustard.

Can't have one without the other.

The jitterbug, a buzzbait, wake baits, walkers, poppers, all will work good at night.

I find that keeping the bait moving works best, but this is by no means a rule.

Your hollow body frogs are great night baits.  You can thorw them with no worry of hangups and work them through or accross anything.  

PS don't be afraid to use white baits at night.  They can be killer.

recently had a trip to a farm pond, and bronzeye frogs were all we used that night. Talk about some big fun.

I night fish from April-Sept & will always throw a top water at different times through out the night.

I agree frogs are a great night bait.Walk the dog with a weed deamon and then watch out!

I do almost all of my fishing at night. I throw topwaters all night long. I haven't really noticed a night bite on topwater this week but I think it is because of a lack of moon. The bite really picks up and hour before sunrise and until about an hour after. It also helps to paint your plugs black.

I do best with an 8-inch muskie jitterbug on a full moon. Yes, you heard me right, muskie Jitterbug. I use a stop and go retrieve. I only take in enough line to produce one or two plops out of the jitterbug. (this imitates the sound of minnows surfacing when being chased.) I will usually leave the bug sitting for 15 or twenty seconds. Some times it helps if you twitch it once or twice lightly; but for the most part let it sit. When the bass hits, it will scare the crap out of you every time. There is nothing like it. You get the chance to catch some monsters with the muskie Jitterbug but bass of all sizes hit it.

The most exciting form of bass fishing in my opinion is night fishing with a jitterbug!!  It is one thing to get a bite first thing in the morning on a senko or weighted plastic worm, but it is an entirely different adrenaline boost to be fishing in the middle of the night and hear the splash of a huge bass as it attacks your lure!!  Just typing this makes me want to go out tonight with the old jitterbug.

I agree that the jitterbug is a great night topwater. However other lures are much more efficient in grass. The hollow frogs, horny toads, and buzzbaits would all be a better choice for grassy night fishing. While a Sammy, Spook or Jitterbug would be more for open water.

There's an OLD pond near where I live that is on a golf course. Well you know what that means; no fishing allowed. Of course there are huge fish in here, and we know people that try to fish it. So there's big fish, no pressure, but you have to sneak in. Me and senko77 decided that the best time to try this would be in the middle of the night. The lake is so grassy that the only lures you can throw are topwaters or senkos. And yes, the topwaters work very well there. shhhhhh....don't tell.

What PART of the night are you guys finding best for topwater?  All night?  I am usually not up early enough for the "morning" topwater bite so I try to throw them when the sun is setting and maybe an hour or so into the night.  I have never even had a blowup on a topwater yet, however.  Throwing jitterbugs and buzzbaits btw.

I've said that many times, but a lot of my fishing until lately has been for cats.

Get to the lake at 7 pm on Friday night and come home around noon on Saturday. Catfish biting from 9 pm to 7 am then the striper hybrids hitting from 7 am to 11. I can't leave while the fish are biting can I?

So you guys use topwater lures alot it seems?

iv never had any luck unless i was fishing a pond, in wich case i consider it the funnest and most productive lure to use

but on a lake or resevour, the only thing that goes for my topwater are sunnies and bluegills.....

as for at night, most topwater baits are advertised as "the best nightfishing lure available" see jitter bug, ect

i usually throw one on for 10 casts or so, and then move back to regular bottom lures....
