Dropshot hooks

When do you ever want to use anything but a 1/0 I’m just getting started and know what kind of hooks but wonder what sizes I’ll need these are the hooks I’ve seen recommend but which ones out of this list are must haves and what sizes go with them?

All of my dropshotting is done with the Gamakatsu EWG #1 size (not 1.0).  BUT....I do not nose hook or wacky hook.  I Texas rig all my DS baits.

Depends on what I am fishing for... if I am going for bait perch out of my creek, then I will use a small size 1 or so Gamakatsu dropshot hook. Deadly for perch with a small piece of bait of choice. For most other bigger things, I've gotten to where I prefer a spinshot hook, size 1 to size 3. Reasons being that I like that I can attach a sacrifice line to the end eyelet in case of a snag- this way I lose the weight but not the whole rig. Also, I like the fact that the spinshots cannot get tangled onto itself because it has a built in swivel that always has the bait facing underneath the line no matter what. I get better hook-ups with this set-up. But that's just my personal preference.

You gotta try them all to see what fit your bill. The size of hook depends on size of your plastic, but I found #1 is a good start.

Spin shot is good you don't have to worry about dropshot knot but add just one annoying step that you have to cut your line first to make tag end. Spin shot hook come with both mosquito hook and EWG(Texas rig) style 

Mosquito hook, most used but in shallow around weed/wood might get a lot of snag. There are some weedless type(slipshot hook) but I don't like it at all.

EWG hook, is also good for weedless and a lot less snag. I used this type of hook a lot (got 25 packs of #2 gamakatsu). The action of this type hook might not be as good as mosquito hook.

I also use Roboworm rebarb hook#1 for weedless and only for Elaztech plastic type.

I have settled into two hooks, I tried about a half dozen others but these two were the best of the lot.

 

For t-rigging, I use the Gamakatsu Finesse Heavy Cover Hook 1/0.  They are stupid expensive but they will let a roboworm last 5-6 fish and give really solid hooksets.

 

For nose hooking/wacky rigging, I use the Gamakatsu Aaron Martens TGW Drop Shot Hook in #1.

They are sharp as hell and even with the barb crimped down, they really hold fish as well.  I don't usually even need to set with them, the bass usually get hooked inside the mouth and I have only ever had a small handfull of bass come off.

Oh, nice, I have not seen those before.  They are cheaper then the ones I like but the keeper looks just as good.

I mostly use 2, 1, 1/0 for drop shot.

hook is pretty sweet. I've actually bent the hook point

out like them on the regular split/drop hooks.

 

Aaron Martens said he would do that (prior to the new

hooks) and his hook up percentage shot up. Same for

me.

I punch with the larger version.  That's what caused me to try the smaller versions

Been drop shotting a long time starting with octopus hooks in the early 80's, in the late 60's early 70's used Sealey sqiude hooks to nose hook live crawdads, both look exactly like today's light wire drop shot hooks. I have used size 4 to 2/0 and recommend; Owner Mosqiuto size 1 for nose hooking and 5133 size 1/0 down shot hook for weedless is what I have used the past decade. Pick 2 and use them before buying more.

These are the same hooks I use. Extremely sharp and the small barb penetrates easily but holds very well. Makes it very easy to just reel into the fish for the hookset.

They really are amazing hooks, I have a few packs in 1/0 I am going to try nose-hooking flukes with this spring.

I only use size 1 vmc drop shot hooks. Always sharp and always hook up well. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
