I have limited experience in fishing with baitcasters. I'm still not real comfortable but getting more so. Anyway, I have a baitcaster with a 6:3:1 ratio and was wondering if I need a 7: also? Keep in mind I'm a bank fisherman who is lucky to get out and fish once a month. What would be the advantage to adding a 7: ?

Fishing 10-12 times per year, i think your 6:3:1 gear ratio baitcaster is perfectly fine.

There is more than enough presentations to fulfill your fishing time with your existing baitcaster.

Good luck and try to add a few more days fishing ..... it is good for the soul. ;)

Gear ratios are overrated on the high end as far as I am concerned. On the other hand, slow reels

have a huge impact on heavy and deep diving presentations.

If I had to guess, I'd say SOMEONE has the itch to get a new reel.  ;  )

Can't believe I'm so weakkneed! I need a new reel like I need a another hole in my head! I went ahead a bought a 5:3:1 ratio reel(like I'm going to see a big difference between that and my 6:3:1:blink:

I'M SO WEAK ITS PATHETIC!!NO FREAKING WILLPOWER????

Don't feel bad.  My collection starts at 3.8:1, then 4.3:1, 4.4:1, numerous 5.1:1's, and my first "6" class reel (6.8:1) should be at the house this afternoon!  And that's just the baitcasters!

I look at every purchase as a once in a life time opportunity.

It will never be (insert whatever date it happens to be)  again and if i miss this chance the opportunity will be gone forever.

Problem solved...........
