So I bought a mojo bass 6'8" mxf topwater rod for jerkbaits and topwater last year and I liked it so much I bought a second one so I could have one dedicated to jerkbait and the other dedicated to topwater. Now I was thinking that a little shorter rod would be nice for some of the ponds I fish.  What is everyone's opinion on a avid x 6'4" mxf for a shorter jerkbait and topwater rod? I know I would lose some casting distance but, should gain accuracy.  Remember this would be for bank Fishing primary but I do go out in a small boat also.

Disclaimer, I don't own one, but I've always heard great things about that rod. From a length perspective, I'm 5'11" and like sub 7' rods for jerk baits. I use a 6'8" jerk bait special and it works well, but I would think 6'4" would be even better if you jerk straight down.

No idea about Avid but I am 5'6" and fish from bank and kayak, my jerbait rod is 6'3" and I love the length, rarely do I hit the water when snapping down but I mostly snap sideways.  I however like a med-mod power which I think pins fish better.

I just picked up a SC LTW 6'3" MLXF spinning rod for similar purposes.  It is to compliment an IMX SJR that is a bit too stiff the smaller baits that I use.  Although long rods are usefully in open spaces, short rods are easier to maneuver around brush and into the less pressured areas on the banks.  I don't remember why I sold my Crucial 63MLXF.  It was a blast for those back handed casts made while balancing on a slippery rock under trees with low branches.

I don't like xfast for treble baits.  My avid66mf works well and a "medium fast" would be the best.  Don't see many medium fast rods but the jdm regular taper I feel is very close.  Guess that's why a lot of guys like the megabas sticks.  The phoenix x10 is supposed to be a great rod for jerks but I have never fished a composite rod other than an ugly stick.  All that to say xfast is not first choice for jerkbaits.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I was hoping I would hear the shorter length would be a good idea and it seems that a few of you agree with my thinking.
