Casting Distance IN DC Reels?

Hey. Has anybody noticed a significant difference in casting distance between DC reels and reels with "normal" braking systems?

I own a Shimano 2016 Antares DC and it is the farthest casting reel that I have (I own Conquest, Steez, Metanium and others). And with the right lure and line, nothing can touch the Antares.

honestly no.  i have a 15 metanium dc and love it, but it's not winning the distance competition among my reels.  i like it because it's the most consistent casting reel i think i have.  it's a spinnerbait machine for casting into the wind with no issues.  for distance, i think i have a couple of reels that i can consistently cast longer than the DC like the steez sv or lew's pro z for sure.

that may just be me, but that's my experience.

I have an exsence dc. Compared to the lews mb I previously used for bombing frogs it casts significantly farther. Like 20% or so. With 50lb braid I can cast almost down to the backing which is almost out of my hooksetting range.

It depends on the DC reel. Not all of them were created with distance in mind. Most of the newer models are all about backlash prevention. They cast like any other reel, but you can tune the settings to the point you don't really even need to thumb the spool. The older Calais/Antares models had an extreme distance setting meant strictly for bombing it out there. Conditions had to be pretty good, otherwise you'd have a bird nest the size of a buick, but they can outcast pretty much anything on the market.

The 2016 Antares DC has the distance setting as well. And from my perspective there is not further casting reel (I do own Conquest 101, Steez SV TWS, Metanium MGL)

Crap, I didn't think anyone saw me that day...

 

Kidding...I have my Calais DC on a 7' 9" heavy TFO rod with the specific purpose of chucking spoons (most often 4 ¹/₂" Doctor Spoons) way, way far away up into skinny water for pike and musky.  Nothing else I have can touch that rig for that purpose...but that rod, which excels at that weight, is at least half the equation.

I had my Calais DC on a similar setup, except it was an 8' Phenix rod, and I had similar results. It's just an absolute beast when you're throwing anything aerodynamic. The only reel I've had that was comparable is the Daiwa Z2020, which may very well be the best reel I have ever owned.

I agree with Ty, it will come down to the DC reel. The older Scorpion DC was not much more of a distance caster. The prior gen Exscence DC will really get after it for distance and also has all the anti backlash settings a guy would ever need. Once you move past the weight of the reel being about 8 and a half ounces, it will out perform about anything out there especially when I bought both of mine new from Japan for about $250 each. So smooth and powerful yet it is one of the only reels out there that will has a drag clicker when a fish pulls drag.
