Swimbaitish rod?

Looking for a rod to throw savage gear line thru trout. Suicide ducks. Maybe some frogs.

Use mainly spinning gear for everything. Even up to blue fin tuna on cape cod. But may be open to trying a conventional setup.

 

What would be a good rod for this?

St Croix avidx 74hf works well on baits up to 2oz for me and frogs.

This is a decent swimbait rod and priced on the lower end, I use one of their older models and it's been a great rod:

I actually have that rod for my BIG swimbaits! The 8" and12" line thru trout. Very nice rod! Only conventional rod i have.

How you like it for frogs????  This drove me away from classic SB rods.  Otherwise i would have gone that route...  Always the odball.  Which size trout and which size duck.  The larger of both will not make a good frog rod.  Both the smaller baits will go good on a frog rod.

I actually use an older model St Croix Mojo MH pitchin rod for frogs, it works pretty good. It has the backbone and the fast to be able to drive them bigger hooks home. The duck I believe has treble hooks, and if so you would want more of a moderate action rod so the hooks don't get ripped out. So if it was me I'd get the larger duck and throw it with the swimbait setup you already own, and get a dedicated frogging rod

I fully agree that if the OP wants to use the larger sized SB a SB stick would be the much better choice.  The open ended question with no budget, or size of lures makes these questions almost impossible to answer.  If there was no budget constraint then he could just grab a megabass power versatile and throw everything including the frog.  One has to assume that budget is the primary concern and the cheaper the better.

I mean I have spent 400 on a tuna jigging rod. Dosent seem necessary for a bass rod tho... haha

 

I am thinking the smaller size duck and trout for this setup. I already have the heavier rod for the bigger baits. Would like to keep it under $150 for the rod.

 

I have not tried the swimbait rod i have for frogs. Hollow body frogs I have seem way to light to throw with that setup.

Here it is hanging on the wall. Think that's an 8" line thru trout. Makes a good decoration! Haha

don't know about spinning for these baits, but for casting i'd vote for Dobyns Fury 795SB.  i have one and would think it would be best for an overall rod like it seems you're after, rated 1-5 oz.  otherwise, i also have an irod swimbait jr rod that would be an option, but it's a little more moderate than the fury and it's rated 1-4 oz.

Well I don't think I will be throwing anything over 2oz with it. So looking for something not as over the top as the rod I have.

Just an FYI, do not use the Okuma GS Swimbait lineup for frogs, they are more of a moderate action and I imagine you're hookup on hollow body frogs would be abysmal. The handles are also kind of long to be working any kind of topwater with a twitching motion.

I have one of these and liked it but for the long handle.  It will throw a 1/2oz frog a mile and will throw a 68 Hudd/S-Waver reasonably well, but the big BBZ Rat felt like too much.  

 

I have replaced it with a MB Hyuga 72H as I am more intrested in swimbaits rather then frogs, though the internet has given me hope that it will be ok for them.  The Fred's MS has been demoted to "light inshore" duties as it will throw a 1oz jig further then I think I can set a hook.

The OP is wanting to stay under 2oz. Magic Stick is perfect for what he's looking for.

I agree, but wanted to point out that I feel that 2oz upper limit seems like a pretty hard one on this rod, so I wanted to let the OP know that, in my opinion, there's not a lot of "room to grow".
